Ok here we go.... Recently, I have been having an issue with the colder temperatures in the morning affecting my tranny. The problem is shifting to 2nd gear causes a nice grinding sound as it kicks back the stick in my hand. Now if I wait 5 seconds or so in between the 1st to 2nd shift, all is fine. This issue only happens on an upshift to 2nd gear. Downshifting to 2nd is prefectly fine when the tranny is cold. Now, I have changed my tranny fluid to Amsoil synchromesh which is designed specifically for the nv3550 on recommendation from others with this transmission. This in turn has made shifting quite smooth now but the issue still occurs. NOTE: When the transmission gets up to temperature, this thing shifts as smooth as butter in all gears. Upon researching this issue, a lot of people say it is the 2nd gear synchro going. BUT, all the ones that had synchros go out say it grinds ALL the time and both upshifting and downshifting and is usually worse when warmed up. Now more reading has me looking at the slave cylinder? Could it not be releasing the clutch when cold? Also, where can I check the fluid level for that master cylinder and slave cylinder? Thanks guys. |

Check your owners manual for the location of the reservoir for the clutch fluid...I do not know what model you have but on my 2002 CRD the reservoir is near the bulkhead on the RHS. My manual gearbox actually gets stiffer in all gears after a long drive on a hot day....has always been serviced by the agents but sometime I will look for a better gearbox oil. The master/slave cylinder assembly on my Jeep has been replaced twice in 140,000 km but this was due to a sqeeuking noise rather than an operational failure. |

Hi, have the same problem, haven't found a solution yet. I have been told could be due to low level of transmition fluid. The problem is more present when the temperatures are low in the morning but once it's warmed up it loosens up a bit. Please any one with a suggetion? The clutch reservoir is at the right level, any suggestion? Clutch isn't slipping either.... Tks, Fil |

clutch may not be slipping, doesn't mean it isn't worn 02 wrangler 5 spd showed same symptoms about 10k prior to the clutch failing, started with 2nd gear, and progressed the stock clutches don't always have an outstanding life expectancy, all depends on how you drive them and nature of your usual driving terrain etc if it were mine, I'd exhaust the usual resolutions, checking fluids, etc then order a new clutch, throwout and pilot a centerforce or something in that league will be a very nice upgrade to the transmission |

I got over 100,000 miles on my stock clutch, although alot depends on driving style. Probably would have gotten more out of it but I had them change it while they were swapping out my blown 3.7 last winter. |

Still having the same issues. I might have to bite the bullet and get someone to look at it. |

If your fluid level is fine, there are no leaks and the clutch isnt slipping you could have one of the following: Bad syncros Bad clutch (the part where it disengages the clutch) Bad master cylinder Bad slave cylinder Being as it only happens in the cold Im leaning almost 100% on the latter 3. There could be a slight seal leak in one of the cylinders, and the part of the clutch that contacts the fork may be failing to disengage the clutch completely. |

If I time my shifts at the perfect RPMs, I will get NO grinding (upshift to 2nd) when it's cold out. Also, it only grinds upshifting to 2nd gear. Downshifting from 3rd to 2nd is perfectly fine, and all other gears are smooth shifting when cold out. That leads me to think 2nd gear synchro? |

Have you changed the fluid recently? I had a similar issue in my talon years ago and I changed to a quality gear oil and it went away. But that is by no means a garaunteed fix. |

Yes, I just changed to Amsoil syncromesh about 1,000 miles ago now. I was hoping that it would fix my issue, but it didn't. |

What was the result? I have the same problem and still not sure what is the problem, if it's the clutch going or it's the Master/slave cylinder or the synchromesh in the gearbox.... When cold I just can't change between 1st and 2nd and now also into 3rd until the Jeep has warmed up and even then, now the gears still stick when changing gears. Help & advice more than welcomed please before I have to take it to the dealer to have it checked out. Fil. |

Not sure if it's a valid concern in this case, but always make sure you push the clutch all the way to the floor every time you shift. Make sure you don't have a floor mat or anything interferring with the travel of the clutch pedal that could be causing you to short throw, and not completely disengaging the clutch. |

The result was a smoother shift in every gear, although the problem still occurs when it is cold in the morning. I just don't know what the problem is. I can get a smooth shift when it's cold out if I rev to about 3000rpm and then shift, but I don't like to work the engine like that until it's up to operating temperature. And yes I make sure the clutch is the whole way to the floor, believe me, it's the first thing I made sure of. ![]() Edit: On a side note. Whenever I am coasting down a hill near my house (5-10mph) in first gear and hold the clutch in, it sounds like the synchros(I think) are gaining speed. I have to shift to neutral, wait for the speed to slow down some (1-2 seconds) then shift to 2nd to get no grinding. Any ideas? |

It's exactly the same symtoms I have in the morning and not getting better. Like you I make sure the pedal is right down to the bottom before changing gear and even trying to get it out of gear I really need to have a go. I am going to book with the dealer and see what they say the problem is, but by the time I am there it will be at full operating temperature, so not realy showing the problem in full. I will keep you posted. Fil. |
