| Post subject: | How to change transmission fluid? |
Hi, I would like to know the easiest way to drain ALL the transmission fluid from my tranny. I know that you can remove the line that goes to the radiator and blead it, then remove tha oil pan and remove the extra. What about the oil that stays in the turbine, it has like 5 extra quarts, how can I remove that. the problem is that my radiator got messed up and mixed tranny oil with water. i drained the oil, but was not able to drain the turbine. So when i filled it with oul again, it still mixed with the water the turbine had. I want to remove it ALL, and fill it with new, clean oil. Any help will be appreciated. thanks! alex |

dismantle and drain the converter, Or Place the cooler return line into a bucket of fluid and the hot side into an empty bucket and run the engine. old fluid will dump into empty bucket and return line will suck new fluid into trans. |

I think the best and most cost efficient way would be to have it towed to the nearest dealer or trans shop that can flush the system with ATF+4. I would probably repeat the flush after a couple thousand miles. Transmissions are expensive and a couple hundred bucks now could save thousands down the road. What happened with the radiator to cause the mix? |

What I did was to disconect the lines from the radiator and turn Jeep on, the oil(water mix) was pumping out to a bucket untill it stoped. Then I removed the oil pan, and removed the last of it, removed the filter and washed it off, cleaned the pan and replaced it. Then filled it with new oil. Apparently the tranny has oil in the turbine which doesn't come out by bleeding it. So, when I checked the oil again, it was still mixed, but not as bad as before. I plan to bleed it again after a couple of thousand miles, and put new fuid on it, and repeat the process a few times until the oil looks good. What you think??? |

Running the transmission dry like that will destroy its pump, its that simple. Not a smart thing to do AT ALL. If you are going to try and do it like that, at least put the intake in a fresh bucket of ATF+4 so the tranny will never run out of fluid. |

The turbine you refer to is this the torque converter? I would not start the vehicle without fresh fluid going in as fast as the old going out. With the cost of ATF+4 I still think you would save money and a Trans if you had it towed to facility with equipment to flush the Trans. |
