have you bought it ? or just thinking about buying it?

Because if you have already bought it your not going to be happy

there are reports of it KILLING your front struts, if you need a spacer general consensus is for a spacer kit you cant go past daystar or the RR combo lift

Yeah word on the trail is that anything over 2.5" will just hammer the @#$! out of CV's and struts.....however, that being said, it seems RRO is in the final stages of developing some CV's that will allow a 4 or 5" lift?!

It will probably cause problems with your struts bottoms out and ball joints. Its problems arise not because it is too high (2.5-3" is fine). It is because of the way it achieves the lift. It just uses a large clevis spacer to achieve the lift with is not really a good way to do it. It will lead to the problems above. If you are on a budget look at a something like Rusty's lift, daystar, Rocky Road Combo (stay away from OTT, same idea as rough country).

Just like the OTT lift, there have been people who have installed the Rough Country lift and like it just fine. But I don't see any point in taking chances--there are lifts out there that cost less money (or the same) and that noone has complained about (Rusty's coil lift and RRO Combo), and kits that are more expensive, but that work brilliantly (Frankenlift). Why go with a kit that most customers have complained about?

To be fair, one advantage of the Rough Country kit is that it is easier to install, because you don't have to disassemble the struts. But that's really not that difficult (even I was able to do it), and it's worth the extra effort to install a kit that won't require expensive repairs later.

I wanted the Frankenlift but having a CRD i guess there is some saging issues, what would be the best fit answer for me to get enough room for 30-31" tires? I'm trying to stay under $400 for the lift. Difficulty is not an issue either. I just dont want to buy a lift and have the springs sag on me due to the weight. I've seen most the CRD guys go with the DayStar, should I follow... Thanks

Well said Troyster.

I don't understand why there is not a Sticky warning on lift kits to avoid.

It would sure be of help to all the new members that are confused with lift kits anyways. There are constant posts daily on which lift should I get. Why not post a sticky on which lift kits to avoid?

Mudtrac,
you'll have to wait awhile for an all coil lift on your CRD, as no aftermarket front springs are stout enough yet. The rear isn't a problem though.
Guys are currently using the Daystar 2.5'' puck spacers and the RRO Combo 2.125" kits. The Daystar 2.5" puck may tend to really tighten up the front coils and give a stiff ride, where as, the RRO Combo has a 1.5" puck with a small 3/8" (OTT) strut spacer to give a better ride, which you can also add a 3/8'' clevis lift to reach around 2.75" or so without balljoint contact.

I also hear that some people with CRDs are running a hybrid lift. Since the CRD is really only heavier up front, they use the daystar components in the front, and run full length lift coils and new longer shocks out back. That way, when someone comes out with a coil lift suitable for the CRDs heavy engine up front, those who want it would only need to replace the front components. Shops that sell Old Man Emu and Daystar components separately should be able to set you up like that if you want.

Rick

I'm happy with the Rough Country lift performance. I would suggest taking the money you saved from buying this lift and also buy Rancho front struts and install them at the same time as the lift. Make sure you ask for the rear spacers from Rough Country,, they only send them by request,, and you'll only get 1 inch lift in the back without them. Tires,, I run Cooper Dscoverer S/T 265/70R16 (31 inch) on stock renegade rims,, works out fine,, no trimming involved. Rides well on the road,, not much noise, and great on rocks and mud.

I think making a sticky to avoid the Rough Country lift would be dishonest. Why not write a tech sheet on the pros and cons of each lift, along with the price tag that each lift has. That way people can make their own choices as to which lift and cost fits their budget and performance needs???

If you have any specific questions about the Rough Country lift you can message me.

Speleorelic,
dishonesty is when you go to Rough Country's site http://www.roughcountry.com/Jeep_KJ.htm and they don't inform you of the CON'S you've listed.

They advertise a 3" lift, but after you install it, you discover the rear springs only give 1" of lift... Then you have to call them to find out why!
Then after the fact, they offer to send you spacers to correct the problem, and you get to take the rear all apart again to install them, or pay to have it done over.
Is this honesty?

Then you state: With the money you save buying this kit, to buy Rancho struts.
The Kit costs $359.00, Rancho struts $80.00, that's $439.00 not including shipping charges. A few dollars more and you could have got a Rusty's 2.5" coil lift complete for $465.00 and no aggravation.

Oh, and how long was it before you had to replace the front struts with Rancho's?

New people need to know of problems like this, and other unfavorable kits such as the over the strut only kits so they can spend their hard earned money more wisely!....

Just my 2 cents.

This is great and perfectly timed information. I was looking to buy new struts and the Rough Country Lift, but not anymore. I am Looking at getting Monroe Qwik Struts (171577L/R) as they are on sale on Amazon, and looking to get a lift similar to the R.C. Many of you have mentioned Rusty's 2.5" lift, which I have never heard of before. (Since many have mentioned it, I am assuming it is a pretty decent brand for the money.

I don't really care if the Liberty rides stiff, but would not want it riding like a moving trampoline. Also, have there been any sagging issues with the Rusty's Kit? and lastly, do they tend to hold up for a while?

I would consider getting the full kit and not get the Monroe struts and Rusty's spacer lift (although it would be cheaper for me to get the spacer/monroe combo).

Thanks for all of the above information, you just saved me a lot of hassle!

Lifting the kj isn't and doesn't need to be expensive.

If you daily drive it, spend the money on quality.

If you only wheel it more than drive it on the road, get creative. You can lift a kj to 2.5 inches for 450 dollars... Probably cheaper if you do it the wrong way.

OK so if you're going to wheel it you don't need the quality products?
Sure cheap lift, not as much flex , parts break sooner sounds good for off road

Used lift , Ok I'll let you have that one
LJ springs
Top plate amd a "CLEVIS" gets you some but not if you are using old crappy stock sagged suspension
By the way,....( Clovis is important in the historiography of France as "the first king of what would become France".)
Where there is a will there is a way is correct to a point but over the last 13 years most of those cheap crappy ways have been tried and failed. Happened " many times" by smart a**es wanting to show us how they can do it better, higher and cheaper only to have another KJ end up junked.
