Is it bad o drive with overdrive off pretty much all the time on the highway or freeway? I just can't stand the way it is constantly stuck in 4th at 2k rpms and can even maintain a constant 70 mph.

Bad for MPG. Overdrive is great for cruising and getting better MPGs, but can really kill your transmission if it has to hunt for gears. For instance when I head to vermont every year when we get to the mountains I turn off over drive as all the weight Im hauling causes the transmission to constantly shift. This hunting for gears creats more heat and can lessen the life of your trans. Would I use OD off all the time? No. Will it hurt your jeep? No. Honestly I travel at 75 just fine, but granted my mods are different then yours. I would have no trouble at even higher speeds, but then again its a jeep and I really hate going over 75 (10 over the speed limit).

Well.......since I installed the 265-75s I have had to run with the OD off quite a bit. Anytime I was on a two lane road and/ or under 70-75 it was off due to no power, shifting back and forth, lugging etc so I ran for almost a year with it off until i finally got the 4.10s in recently. As far as mileage went with the 265-75s and OD off I could get 20.5 -21 at 65 real easy
But man it is so nice now to use overdrive again and no shifting back and forth and even way better mileage!

I keep my O/D off but I usually let it go back into 4th around 55mph. Seems to do a good job staying in 4th but I only have 245/70 tires. Dont really pay attention to mpg anymore but I get around 18mpg mixed I think..

20.5  I can barely squeeze 15?? I have 245s also, does mine reall need to be calibrated for 245/75? My speedo is off by about 3 mph too but im actually going slower than my speedo says. I really wish I could figure this out it is so frustrating to drive I really sometimes just want to roll it!! :x

i didn't have too much problems with my 245 E's, felt it was more so the weight of the tires than the dia / rpm it was at

your plugs and all that jazz good?

i do remember that right at 70 it had a tenancy to kick down, but at 72-73 it held on long hills with no prob which I guess is what you're saying

changing the speedo isn't going to affect anything but some alternations in driving style can help, not using cruise etc

overall keeping the OD off isn't going to hurt anything that normal every day driving wouldn't , OD Off is better than shifting constantly

if mine is going to shift, i shift it for it by turning the od off, then back on when i know it's not going to be likely to want to downshift again

habit from the old olds/pontiac passenger cars, downshifting on hills for some of those vehicles for various reasons really killed those transmissions

That's my main issue, up hills it completely bogs down, on fairly steep long hills I honestly have to floor it to keep from stoping down 15mph

out of OD, it should be able to hold itself at whatever speed you want in 3rd without kicking down and without flooring it

all the other things you have mentioned are typical "heavy tire/large tire + stock gear ratio" symptoms, that last one however, not so much

make sure you got good plugs and air filter goin on.. a stanky airfilter will make you pound the steering wheel

Its really weird it sometimes will climb hills fine but if they are fairly steep OD will honestly just maintain the speed im at, you can almost feel it trying to go but it simply wont. Ive been trying to figure thouse out for almost a year now and im about fed up with it.

You need to regear, that is the only way to fix your issue.

Oh and that TSB is for the terrible reverse shudder in the 42RLE's.

From how your complaining so bad you'd make up the cost in mere months by the gas your saving, not to mention making the trans last longer also.

I have the same issues even on the slopes going on overpasses on the highway. Always downshifting, losing speed, gaining speed on the downslope because it is downshifted completely over the crest and then rockets forward. I bet I regularly achieve a 7 or 8 mph swing with my cruise on, plus downshifting.

Also, I routinely struggle for 15mpg. I've gotten close to 17 before on full tanks of interstate travel in flat areas. Tom (and some others) always got more than lots of people, even before regearing or not. I'm not sure it isn't the older drivetrains / transmissions.

It's tough to justify regearing for milage though but I've been considering it too. Will be nice to have some of that low end pull back too.

before from here to Wapak with cruise on at 70 (plus  ) mine would shift done 25-30 times. Now regeared I drove all the way down and never once shifted down. Before running at say 65 and wanting to passsomeone it would shift down with the slightest throttle pressure, now it doesn't have to shift it just goes :pepper:
Plus its so much fun stop light to the next light now :JEEPIN:

Ive been trying to save up for some new Duratracs but it seems I might as well save up for a regear instead, ive already replaced the tranny once at 53k :(
