Post subject:  Weird fuel reading

I own an 06 Liberty Limited gasser with no mods. (for now) Just bought it about 3 weeks ago. :JEEPIN: While out running errands with the family the other day my display was reading 33 miles till empty and the fuel gauge seemed to look about right to correspond with the readout. I stopped at a store and ran in while leaving the wife and kids in the jeep with the engine running as I was just going to be less than 5 minutes. (Which I was) When I came out the readout was sitting at 1 mile and low fuel warning was chiming. The fuel gauge was also sitting right on E. The wife said the readout chimed while I was in the store and the reading went from 33 to 10 to 7 then to 0 then up to 1 within just a few minutes. No A/C running, just sitting in park idling. According to the display I'm getting around 19-20 hwy and 16-17 city. What could have caused this sudden drop in fuel at the bottom of a tank? Is there something out of calibration, or is it just a common thing with Jeep when the tank gets low? I guess what I'm really wondering is do I have a problem? Seems really weird for the readout to go from 33 to 1 within the span of about 5 minutes parked at idle.

The 5 mins idling does use gas and was the cause,no problem at all.

Oh and best to keep it always above a 1/4 tank of gas, your fuel pump will like you better.

5 mins of idling would use 30 miles worth of gas?! 1/8 a tank?! That just does not seem right to me. We had a Windstar van a few years ago that would plummet after 1/4 tank due to the shape of the tank, (as with a few other ford models) but the Jeep tank is pretty much rectangular. I do try to keep it over 1/4 tank, but in this instance I was just around the corner from a gas station so i was not giving letting it get below 1/4 tank a second thought as I was planning on filling up anyways. I would just like to have the comfort of knowing my gauge is reading correctly. You know how it is when your getting used to a "new" vehicle. Gotta wonder about anything that pops up then obsess over it. Lovin' my Jeep though. First one I have owned. Gotta get my 90' F150 sold so I can afford some goodies for the Jeep!

No fuel gauge reads correctly.Your KJ's fuel gauge will read way off at the lower levels to warn you to fill up even if you do have 2-3 gallons of gas left to prevent burning up the fuel pump. The fuel pump uses the fuel it's submersed in to cool it and under a 1/4 tank of gas it's no longer submersed in gas and not being cooled.GM has a major issue with this so Chrysler made there gauges read way off at the lower levels to prevent those kind of issues.Though it saves you $1000 repair bill most still complain about how the gas guage reads.

That's what I was hoping to hear. That the gauge errs on the side of protecting the pump and not running empty. Just glad I was a block away from the gas station when I discovered it! Had it down to 22 miles to empty one night on the way home from work and never got a low fuel warning, but at the time I was running 70 on the hwy and not sitting in park at idle. I hate to let it get under 1/4 tank, but I used to drive a Dodge Caliber that did pretty good on gas and the Jeep's mileage is taking a little getting used to. At 40 miles round trip to work I used to have to throw in $20 every 4 days in the Caliber. Now it's $20 every 3rd day in the Jeep, sometimes less depending on how much the wife steals it while I'm sleeping during the day while on night shift. :banghead: Thanks for the info and the super quick response tjk. Love this site!
