| Post subject: | Engine surges until MAF plug line is pulled then runs better |
I have a 2005 CRD with 78,000. I have been trying the different suggestion on this site but still have not found the problem. The engine surging problem started after running low on fuel but not out. The CEL light cam on before the problem started. The motor surges under load and barely run up to 60mph or when not under load. Also, there is a noise like the business end of a shop vac on the drivers side which cycles up and down with acceleration. I pulled the EGR and cooler. Cleaned everything and reinstalled. Also cleaned the FACV and it seemed to operate correctly. New fuel filter - nothing changed I pulled the MAP it was full of carbon, and cleaned it. No change I pulled the MAF connection at the air filter and the engine runs smoother but still lacks power. The "air" noise does not change. I believe another post describes this as carbon blowing through the FACV. Air filter is fine. I cleaned the MAF. Pulled the turbo hoses, the out hose had a small leak so I repaired and tightend all the hoses down. Started the engine turbo seems to be doing its job at idle. Still no change in engine surging. It seems to me I have an air problem I just dont know where to go next. No mods have been made to this engine at least until I get it running correctly. |

Hmm.. So you are certain that your intercooler hoses are both fine with no cracks, splits, or holes in them? Mine split on the bottom and you couldn't even see it. This happened at 75,000 miles. Took a while to diagnose because it was undetectable by the naked eye. |

I agree with liberty CRD check your hoses and also check your fuel filter. If your fuel filter is clogged then you will get surging and major power loose. |

Thank you for the thoughts. I looked over the intercooler hoses pretty thoroughly but if that small of hole will cause the problem, I'll look again or just replace. Fuel filter - I installed a new one when I cleaned the EGR. That would be a easy place to check for fuel flow/pressure. Going back to the EGR. I doubt the EGR has been replaced, just purchase this KJ couple months ago. (I liked our 2006 CRD Limited so much that I started shopping for a second). My thinking was a good cleaning would at least tell me if that was part of the problem or do I just need to replace the EGR unit? However, the cleaning didnt help at all. |

Even a small hole will kill accel and cause the hissing tha increases on accel. I remember my first turbo had an issue like this where it drove semi normal but lost power the harder I hit the pedal and made the sam hissing noise. Come to find out my hose had dry rotted and was torn. Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk |

Yep, sounds like a turbo hose. Where you located? |

Ok, the votes are for hoses, I'll try again. So, I am running back and forth to work without the MAF pugged in am I risking any damage to the engine? It did dig itself up the hill in the 6 inches of new snow but I sure hate that hollow hissing sound when I accelerate. Thanks again for the advice. |

You all were correct, break in the intercooler hose. That would explain the "pop" I heard when I first drove it after cleaning the the EGR. Now its time to read up on the Provent purchase and installation. Thank you for all the hard work on this very helpful site. |
