Today I was under my Jeep removing the rear sway bar and checking the bolts on my skids, etc. when I noticed this cylinder shaped thing mounted to my rear diff. It's got a bracket that attatches to the top of the diff, which places the cylinder on the driver's side, between the diff cover and where the driveshaft enters the diff. I've never noticed it before and I've never seen pictures of it elsewhere, so I was wondering what it is. Here are a couple of pics of it (the quality stinks, the pics were taken with my phone.)

I believe you may be looking at a damper. Its designed to absorb or dampen shock and vibration from the axle.

That's the harmonic balancer for your driveline. I bent mine out on the trail and had some serious clunks when I hit bumps driving until I figured out what it was. When the bracket is bent it will contact the rear sway bars going over bumps making a horrible racket.
