I know there have been posts about this.. Ive been reading these for about 4 or 5 hours last night searching and reading everything I could find... Goes away after engine reaches temp.

Video Link:

Sorry cell phone video not that great.. But you can hear it better around min 1 or 2 when the whine from my ps pump stops.... Another annoying cold problem

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tS4u4z-fc9Q

When cold my engine makes quite a bit of noise on the bottom end so it sounds..
Temp is about 1-2 Deg Flipping cold
5w-30 Mobile 1 Synthetic Oil, Level is good
No Check Engine light
125k Miles

From what i have read, It's either a rod knock, Timing Chain Guides, piston slap...

Please let me know if anyone else has this problem.. Solutions

Noise goes nearly goes away under higher RPM's over 2k didnt run to high noise is scary :(

500+ Miles From home Suggestions?

Local dealership mechanic said they are all noisy when cold... But didnt see mine personally..

Hopefully Tj or someone while chime in..

Are you sure its in the engine?
I didn't listen to the youtube but...
when my left side cat let go it sounded as if the bottom end was coming out the side of the block
after crawling underneath and listening to everything it was the cat just rattling REAL BAD!
You could hit the cat and hear it rattling around after I found out what it was.
Sitting at a light or at idle I was afraid to run it
Just a thought

I could check it... But it goes away when warm.. Its like 1 outside with wind chills in the mid to low negative teens!!!! Feeling daring just going outside with the cold none the less sitting out there....

Update: Went outside to go look, Hit the cat... a little bit of noise.. Turned car on grabbed cat with heat resistant gloves... shook it while running... while it is some noise... Its not coming from the same place... Found an exhaust leak great more projects lol.. But not the problem..

Duff,

I hear a low rattle and a clicking after the whine goes away.
The clicking I hear at 2:45 or round about there, I get too when I start up in the morning and it is cold. I don't get the low rattle. I would like to know what people think it is too.

Try the Converter... Like tom said I know my is at least partially contributing to the clicking... When I grabbed and kept the thing from moving with my hand and the car running.. grabbed the cat with high temp gloves that noise diminished some.. the clicking as you refer to it.. I know thats not all of it but it could contribute.. Kinda hard to hold the cat and take a step back to listen at the same time lol

I think that's just common cold weather noises for an engine with high mileage on it. I know exactly what you're talking about because mine does it too. I try to let the Jeep run for about 5-10 minutes before driving it for the first time on very cold (Upstate NY) days. If I don't have the time, I keep the RPM's below 3,000 and drive it conservatively until it warms up. A potential solution to this problem is using a 10W oil instead of 5W-30 during the winter, however I've read that that could potentially lead to other issues, such as oil pump failure, or poor cold engine oil circulation, which of course is not a good thing. The best way to deal with it IMHO is to just let it warm up, and take it easy until the engine comes up to operating temp.
