Just go original unless you have a lot of money Make sure you get the right year engine, not all years interchange |

i know...i just need to find the best deal on a motor...i might have a day where everyone can come over and help swap it. depending on how long it will take but scott, should i get an 03 reman? what do they come with, what would i need to reuse from the old motor (water pump, pully, alternator, etc.)? what would i need to do with the computer and stuff, is that all just plug and play, nothing else? what do i need to take out from the engine compartment to start taking out the motor? should i use synthetic right off the start to avoid the engine failing again? |

kskj wrote: Glad to hear you are keeping it. ![]() i dont think i can ever get rid of it...it was my sisters (passed away) but i need to find the most cheap motor, i can install it, and if i cant install it, my friends shop will do it for $500 so either new or reman, what ever would be the best bet for me and the best price |

Remanned are great if from a good reputable company most you have to reuse your water pump etc I would replace everything you can while doing it ie waterpump etc. I would do that before used if you have the money, be better in the long run unless you can find a very low mileage |

If you aren't in too big a hurry, what about trying to rebuild it yourself? |

Pastafari would be the perfect break in for that new engine. |

ihatemybike wrote: If you aren't in too big a hurry, what about trying to rebuild it yourself? haha, not worth rebuilding it...im not taking the chance of it going bad on me again...might as well get a whole new one or reman heck, it will be a fun il lost event to help pull the motor and then slap a new one in it...if it takes 2 days, i have showers and 3 extra bedrooms |

You can find remans all day on ebay http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2002-2007-Jeep-Liberty-3-7-Dakota-Durango-engine-/360095627669?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item53d75f3995 this one is a decent price. Plus free shipping and unlimited milage 3 year warranty. Sounds like a really good deal to me unless you want to join the CRD club of course |

I went with a remanned long block. Everything total, including labor, was 4500 flat, and I got an amazing deal since I paid cash. It was going to be 5300 if I didn't use cash. It came with a 6 year, 100k mile warranty from some place in texas. You HAVE to get a new oil cooler though. BUT, I suggest dropping in a 4.0. It will last MUCH longer than the 3.7. I have only seen one KJ go past 200k. But I suspect Tom's will be the second KJ to break 200k(to my knowledge). I've seen 4.0's in cherokee's and wranglers go up to 500k, but more commonly seen at 300k. |

I've seen 4.0's in cherokee's and wranglers go up to 500k, but more commonly seen at 300k. Well one issue the 4.0 will not fit,the mods needed will cost well over $10,000 as a whole new drivetrain is needed and all custom fabbed mounts. The 2nd issue the 4.0's can not hold oil, they always leak and rarely reach 300k,200k is at about the max of that engine. The 3rd issue to make it legal it would need a 4.0 from a '03-'06 and they have major issues with cracking heads. Not worth it by any means. The 3.7 is a fairly new engine compared to the 4.0 and as a whole the 3.7 is a very good engine.I mean with 5-6 million out there you will have failures, just like with any mass produced engine. In the last 2 years I have condemmed way more 4.0's then 3.7's,actually had only one 3.7 with a bad engine but driving 25 miles with no coolant will do that to any engine.I've seen at least 20+ 4.0's that headed to the junkyard, from cracked heads/blocks to broken cranks at the harmonic balancer. To the OP.................. If you have some time to collect the parts you can build a brand new engine with OE direct parts for less then $3000,then at least you know where you are starting from. |
