So i'm getting a short and fast grinding noise when starting the vehicle. Runs great when started and only seems to do it when its a cold start. After driving for a while and stopping, then restarting it doesn't seem to happen. I'm thinking maybe the solenoid.

Any other thoughts?

How expensive a repair do you think it is?

I'm fairly mechanically capable, think I could do this at home?

Thanks ya'll :D

Could be the starter,I have seen this issue before on other vehicles when cold.Takes 10mins to chnage out the starter on a 3.7.

I figured it wouldn't be that hard. On my TJ I mistakingly paid someone to do it without realizing how easy it was.

The starter is remarkably cheap at the stealership too I just replaced mine 123.75$ out the door. I could have paid 100$ for a rebuild but for the difference new is always better

Well had the starter replaced.......didn't help.....but I've got a new starter Yay!!!

Still makes the same noise when starting cold. This morning was really bad considering the snow we've gotten. It was kind of a drawn out whine. Anyone have any other opinions on what it could be. Mechanic couldn't really tell since he only heard it for a second, one time it started.

I'd try to get my head down their or just put your hand on their while someone starts it. Wouldn't want to buy and swap the flywheel from worn out teeth. Does anyone know if these starters use shims? Does the new starter only do it cold as well?

Another couple of thoughts. The starter uses a relay to start. They can chatter pretty loud with too low of voltage to the coil side, almost sounds like a grinding but more like a really fast chatter. Your second post says a drawn out whine. When you have a bad contact in a wire or at a connection the arcing electricity can definitely whine not grind or chatter. Maybe you have a bad battery or connection or wire, any would lower voltage to the starter and even the starter bendix can chatter as it kicks in and out. If you have a volt meter put it on the battery and try to start it. If the voltage starts at 12.8 volts +/- .5 volts and drops no more than about 2 volts when you try to start it it's probably not the battery. If you don't have a meter then turn on your headlights and watch to see if they lame really dim while cranking. Here’s something we use in massive engine rooms to find a short circuit. Turn out all the lights throw the faulting breaker and watch for the flash. In other words wait until it's very dark or park in a dark garage try to start it and watch for a flash of blue or yellow light if it works you won't miss it and you save lots of time. The only when cold thing points torwards the battery. But it may be a combination. Did the grind change to a whine or same sound different description?
