Ok, I've been getting a whine from my power steering pump on cold mornings now which tells me it's time for some new fluid. More specifically, synthetic fluid. Anybody got any recommendations? I can get some amsoil synthetic power steering fluid for around $7 a bottle, but I also read that that later year liberty's recommend ATF 4 fluid? (Which I would be able to get at a store, would have to order amsoil fluid.)

Also, anybody have any suggestions for changing it? I might just use a turkey baster and empty the reservoir a couple times. :?

OK, I'll bite.

Go here for recommended ATF+4 types.

The turkey baster works well. Remove a bunch, top up, run and cycle the steering from lock to lock a couple of times and repeat until you are satisfied that the bulk of the PS system has been flushed. You'll never get 100% using this method but it'll net some result.

Naturally, I run the Amsoil PS fluid in all of my Jeeps and it works great, no more cold morning whine.

ATF+4 is synthetic.

A PS whine is from air being in the system, you have a leak and yes many PS leaks are unseen even if looking very hard.

Yes I know ATF+4 is synthetic, my question was if it was ok to use on the older models which recommend power steering fluid.

Not sure about the leak. My explorer had the same whine at cold morning startups. Changed the fluid to synthetic and no more whine. :!: I think it has to do with regular fluid being thicker to pump on cold mornings....
