Hey LOST peeps. 2002 KJ. Got the check engine light while driving home. Pulled the codes when I got home and got just one, P0740, torque converter clutch solenoid circuit. Transmission was acting completely normal. Took it to the dealer, who tells me that "once you get into the electronics" there are all kinds of codes spitting out, basically every single one that you can have, including high temperature, and it's undoubtedly destroyed.

He could be right. Obviously there's something wrong for the CEL to come on, and it has 230,000 miles on it and I have occasionally noticed it slipping out of top gear. But this same dealer serviced the transmission about 25,000 miles ago and said nothing about any problems. In all 230,000 miles, never once has the transmission temp warning light come on. I know the bulb works. Is it possible that all these codes were really there and I got only one?

Higher end scanners will display all the codes where as a cheapy code puller will not, even the key trick will not display every code.

There are different code classifications, current MIL codes(active codes),history codes(no longer active),and pending codes(has not failed enough drives cycles to turn on the MIL).Most scanners will only display some current(active) codes.

Thanks. My scanner displays current and pending codes. Maybe not history codes. It's a Craftsman 87702.

I'm just a little hesitant to take his word for all this when I've never seen any evidence of excessive heat and they don't seem to have torn it open to confirm any of it.

Well just having the high temp codes does not mean the light ever turned on,or that it actually ever overheated, just that the TCM has detected a fault with the temp sensor circuit. You can always get a 2nd opinion at a good trans shop.

Yeah. I might do that. They're quoting me a pretty reasonable price for a reman, so either way it's not the end of the world. Thanks!
