Post subject:  4wd will not unlock?

My 2005 crd will not come out of 4 wheel drive
whether in part time or full time until I shut my
engine off. I don't use 4 wheel drive a lot and when
I do it's very hard to turn and there seems to be a
droning noise when it's engaged.
I also have a shudder under hard exceleration at
highway speeds, I have about 67,000 miles on her.

Thanks, Gregg

Making the assumption you have a CRD then it came equipted with Jeep's NV242 transfer case. Jeep calles it "Select Track" but Sir Sam prefers NV242 :-)r :SOMBRERO: It is a common occurance for them to not shift into or out of the various ranges because of the way the internal mechanism operates.
There are various methods to getting them to shift but shutting the engine off I don't think has been mentioned. If you scan through post titles over the last month, since there's snow on the ground in a lot of the country, you'll find many answers on how to get it out and some things that can make it worse.

But it's a completly normal situation :juggle: :jester: :dizzy:

FYI - on the 242 transfer case - the shift lever - pushes against a spring that pushes a collar
if there's any mismatch front to rear - and that includes tire size, wear, or pressure - then there enough stress that the collar won't move - normally that means 4x4 won't engage - but it can also mean it won't disengage.

best bets - be rolling about 3-5 mph and shift into neutral and rev engine a bit
or stop and back up 10-15 feet. these take the stress out of the driveline.
and match pressures - front to rear.

the Full time 4x4 tends to have a little more slop allowed because of the center differential
