Hi,
I have had problems with my gearbox/Transmition for a while now, so I decided to take it to my Jeep dealership to have it checked out & fixed. By the time I took it in I have real problems getting from 1st into 2nd when cold and let alone into 3rd at any time, warm or cold; when changing gears they always where sticking even at full operating temperature. Now I have posted part of the story in the tread here, viewtopic.php?f=1&t=55878&start=20

My question is: Can water get into the gearbox? Looks like when the garaged opened the box and took a part they found (so they tell me) rusty gears and the syncro are well warn out but not broken. Also the bearings inside the box are well loose/warn to.

I can imagine that, maybe, some water could have got in although I haven’t been trough any deep rivers at all since buying the Jeep ( yes it has a snorkel it was there when I bought it) and it has 80K miles on the clock only. Can it generate so much rust in it to damage the gearbox? After all there is oil turning around all the time keeping the clogs well oiled.

I use the Jeep every day & since I have owned it it has been serviced at Jeep dealership only.

Looking forward the your opinions....

Fil.

So the previous owner installed a snorkel? Did you ever check fluid condition after buying it? I'd bet it was used in water and got contaminated by the previous owner. Snorkels are great unless you don't address all the other things that can take on water and don't pay attention to fluid conditions after fording water.

Hi,
I guess you are right. The reason I didn't check, or think about it, was that the Jeep came with full service history from a Jeep Dealer!!!! I guess I know know better...the dealer is now paying for the repair in full. I still have my doubts that it might only be down to the fact thet "water" got in to Gearbox. I haven't been able to see the damage ( I will ask to see the old parts) but I think it might well have been also down to difective orignal parts ( I am no expert) as inspite of water getting in it can't have made all that damage after all it's asealed unit. My gearbox, when I looked under the Jeep, was dry outside and had no leaks or oily patches. I should get the Jeep back on Wednesday week and I will ask for info.
As a curisity, any way now of making it more water proof? let's try and avoid a repeat, I suppose diffs need to be made too more waterpoof, any advise? I still won't realy be doing a lot of deap water crossing, but as the motto goes "better be safe than sorry".

extend the breather tubes for the diffs, transfer case & trans and never stop in standing water. Glad to hear they are taking care of it.

couple hits from a quick search:

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=53364&hilit=+breather+extended

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=48776&hilit=+breather+extended

viewtopic.php?f=104&t=44164&hilit=+breather+extended

not sure what all is in those topics but that should get you started. Just search for breather and it will bring up more topics.
