Post subject:  Brake issue?
So, here in the Northeast, we've been getting tons of snow. This morning as I was driving to work, my 2004 Liberty was driving strangely. I first noticed that the steering wheel was turned a little left, but the Jeep was driving somewhat straight. After a couple of hundred yards, the wheel straightened out on its own. However, the Jeep now seemed to be fishtailing a bit (driving in 4 high). My first thought would be too much snow packed in the wheels. I then noticed that when I hit the brakes, there was a rather loud thump. I could duplicate this using the e-brake, so now I'm guessing something with the rear brakes. So, could this still be caused by too much snow, or is it something else altogether? Any help is greatly appreciated.

ice on the calipers, makes the brakes drag and stick, calipers get stuck

could easily explain the noises, as well as the dragging or fishtailing, rear wheel drags its going to want to fishtail, front wheel drags its going to want to drive crooked

Well, just to let all of you know, I was way off. It seems that the right rear lower control arm rotted out on me, and snapped in half. Luckily I noticed it before my rear axle fell off. All fixed now.

See there is a reason for the rear sway bar :lol: ..... It doesn't do anything.... :roll: PFFFFT!
It looks like it was the only thing stopping you from major damage...

Good gosh man! How often do you clean the under side of the Jeep? If the lower control arm is rusted that bad them you need to do a very thorough inspection of everything else. I didnt even think something like that was possible.

THIS ^^^..... At first I thought OP meant a bushing was rottted out and then I checked the pic and was like :shock: :shock: :shock:

Everything has been thoroughly inspected, and all is well. I was more than a little surprised to see it snapped like that, as was the tow truck driver, and the guys at the dealership. I'm hoping it was just a fluke thing. As far as washing the UNDERSIDE of my Jeep? I can't even remember when I washed the TOPSIDE of it. (However, I usually get the "undercarriage wash" when I go through the car wash)

To be honest, I've been away from wheeling and modding for a few years now, so the Jeep doesn't get the love and attention that it used to. I know it's sad, but there are other things in my life that take precedence. I do keep up with regular maintenance, but with the over 6 feet of snow we've gotten so far this year, climbing under my Jeep hasn't been too high on the priority list.

Looks like I wasn't the only one, and now Jeep is finally going to issue a recall. http://bottomline.msnbc.msn.com/_news/2 ... berty-suvs

BTW, the other side rotted out on me about 10 months after the first one, and I had to have that one replaced too. Looks like Chrysler owes me some money!

Any reason why his does not apply to an 03? Was there a difference in materials or is my rear axle about to go south while I go north?
