I'm considering switching to Amsoil. I'm not completely sold on the extended drain intervals.

Currently, I run Mobil 1 Full synthetic with a WIX filter @ 5k mile intervals.

I switched to synthetics at 35k and am approaching 50k. I've had the KJ since it was born.

My question is:
Of the people using synthetics; what do you run, and when do you change it?

Amsoil Users:
Which oil do you use?
XL 5W-20 or 100% 0W-20

Do you use the Amsoil filter?
Changed with the oil, or at other intervals?

And for the record, I'm sorry to have created "another oil discussion."

I use AMSOIL 0w20, once a year I change it or every 15,000. I had a oil analysis done at my last change, engine is still like new. They were blown away I had 13,795 miles on the oil I sent them.

I run the ASL 5w30 in both of our KJ's, yearly or 10K mile intervals (neither ever hit 10K in a year) or I change it when I get a wild hair to do so (happens every so often). Naturally I am using the EAO34 oil filter in both. personally I'd not run the 25K interval in a vehicle that sees severe service like My KJ's do. Severe here is mostly short runs around town w/ the occasional blast across the state to go wheeling somewhere in the mountains or desert. I'd also not run any interval over 15K w/out good air filtration to take care of the incoming air and good oil filtration w/ the Ea series oil filters.

fwiw, If I had a KJ that spec'd the 5w20, I'd run the 5w30 instead. Only reason MFG's changed to the 5w20 was to up their overall fuel consumption numbers. (however, also not saying anything wrong w/ 5w20, just my personal preference)

It was a company that a Penske branch I used to service uses. I am sorry I don't know their name, my buddy works over there and I can try to find out tomorrow.
edit: never mind he just called me, he said they do their own analysis at their labs.

Cool. An oil thread (I didn't want to start one but wanted to ask...)

Am using a store brand 5W30 group 3 synthetic (because it's the cheapest "synthetic" in Canada - almost free for me) made by Shell. It is rated well for the price and seems to have improved my fuel consumption a bit since I switched last year. I generally change every 5K but sometimes sooner seasonally like I did before switching to synthetic - am worried about the intervals still and don't trust the oil I guess. (Canadians - it's Canadian Tire Motomaster Formula 1 synthetic). Am very tempted to send this fill's sample to Blackstone to get a better idea of what I'm running and its effect on the KJ engine.

Would like to switch to Mobil 1 as it's the only oil easily found here that goes on sale from time to time that's a 100% PAO synthetic. Amsoil can be found here with some effort but it's really expensive and I wonder if it's worth it... do any of you buy the gallon jugs or cases for $? Are their filters really worth it either?

The only concern I have with some of the expensive synthetic PAOs (ASL, RP) is on my older engine do they have agents to protect the seals from the PAO dissolving properties - last thing you want is weeping or gasket deterioration after the expense of runing expensive oil.

It's mostly about price right now - up here we just don't have the access to product or fair pricing so am leaning towards Mobil 1 I think ?

Now gear lube... ah heck I'll start a thread for that.

honestly, if you are not looking to extend your drain interval time/mileage well beyond 5k miles why bother w/ anything expensive. 5k intervals on any Syn or even modern dino oils these days, is fine. I feel that It is around the 8K/yearly mark and up that i'd start to spend the money on the better oils & filters.

I use Mobil 1 0W-30 and change it every 5K miles. I use a Mobil 1 EP filter.

That is what I feel comfortable with, so that is what I do. The tires get rotated every 5K and it is very easy to change the oil while I have everything out. And honestly, the cost of oil is not a concern for me. I run what I think is the best for my situation. Generally, though, Mobil 1, as well as other synthetic oils, are always on sale at my walmart in 5 quart jugs for around $22. I wouldn't exactly call that expensive or cost prohibative.

In the end, it is all about changing the oil and filter on a regular schedule. Obviously, you don't want to run a dino as long as extended drain synthetics, but pick and oil and change it at an interval that works for you and the oil.

I use Rotella 5 x 40 synthetic diesel oil. I change 2 of my diesel cars twice a year, spring and fall. Other 2 are one diesel Mercedes and Ford Shelby/Mustang GT500 not driven much, less than 3k a year, once a year for those two.

I run Amsoil 5W30 in my KJ at one year intervals, which is approximately 7,000 miles per year. I run Amsoil 5W30 HDD in my Dodge Cummins at one year intervals, which is approximately 13,000 miles per year. I may have leaky injectors in my 2000 XJ, so I monitor my oil changes with an UOA until I get that problem fixed. The two most important things to consider is filtration and quality of oil. Amsoil has some of the best oil “additive packages” and best “oil filters” on the market.

Well, I'm going the Amsoil route.

I'll probably do a UOA at 7,500 miles and go from there.

JJsKJ,

I sent you a PM about sending you a payment. Did you get it?

What are we looking at as far as price?
The reason I ask is because I can hit 10k in less than 4 months like nothing. I too have been considering switching to a full synthetic.

Mobil 1 10w-30, full syn. The 4.0 seems to like it better than dino oil. I change it 3-4k miles, never more.

I been using 5w40 Rotella T6 every 6,250 miles with a NAPA Gold or Pure One filter. recent oil report showed I could extend that to 8000 miles. I have a CRD so its not the same as a Gasser.
