Look under the master brake cilinder (the thing with the white fluid container on top of it) if you see nothing, you have no ABS. If you see a black box with a bunch of metal pipes connected to it, you have ABS. Or, turn the wheels to full lock and look. If there is a black wire running from the inside of the wheel towards the engine compartment..you have ABS. I have seen wheelbearings for the KJ for as little as $50 on Ebay... One way to determine which side the bad bearing is on is by the use of a long soft turn kind of like an interchange ramp. As you are going around the turn (if it is soft enough of a turn) you can kind of swerve to the inside of the turn to see if the noise gets louder or quieter. I don't mean yank the wheel but gently turn almost like changing lanes. If it gets louder while turning into the curve then it is the outside (relative to the turn) bearing. If it quiets down then it is the inside (again relative to the turn) bearing. What is happening during this testing method is you are taking some weight of the inside bearing so if it is the bad one the humming will quiet down. If the bad bearing is the outside bearing then it will get pronouncedly louder as you turn into the corner because you are loading more weight on the bearing. It has worked for me in the past. You can wait until they begin to get real loud and it makes deciphering which side much easier. Good luck. |

I have been having the same problem myself and I notice it quiets down on a right turn, now how do you know if it is the front or rear? I jacked the vehicle one side at a time and put in in gear. I am thinking it is the rear bearing, but the sound is not very pronounced when it is jacked up and free wheeling. |
