ok I was driving to the movies earlier tonight and I noticed it. Im not sure if it was on last night but that was the last time I drove. I DID GET GAS LAST NIGHT. could that be the problem? is my light just on becuase of the loose cap? I tried tightening it and then turning the car on... light is still on. I have read that it may take a couple days if this is the case though... So what should I do? is it safe to drive? do I need to tell my parents? I dont want to freak them out if it was just the gas cap ya know? thanks guys this is really scaring me...

It could have been a loose cap. If you don't have a scanner, go to Autozone, Murrays or the like and they will scan it for you for free.

Check your fluids, make sure nothing is loose and yes you should be ok to drive it. Yes they check it for free.

Put the key in the ignition....
Turn it to the accessory position (all the way forward, without turning the jeep on/running)..
Then Turn the key all the way back
then turn the key to the accessory position.
then turn it all the way back again
and then again to the accessory position

Some code should pop up at your mileage guage....

Ok so I went by autozone... not the gas cap. The scan said it was an o2 sensor. How important is that to get replaced? Should it be a top priority right now? Are there any negative effects of it having failed?

Yes get it replaced real important as it may cause the engine to run richer than normal which then could cause cat problems later
Did they tell you which one it was
They should of gotten a code which told them which one.
Real easy to replace the two rears are 5 minute jobs, fronts a little longer

Just for future reference ....IF the check engine light starts FLASHING, shut it down IMMEADIATELY.....a flashing CEL means something VERY BAD IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW WITH THE ENGINE.

Mine broke a valve spring and the CEL started flashing... before I could get it shut off it dropped the valve into the cylinder and destroyed the cyl. head and piston, trashing the engine so I had to have the engine replaced.

Technically, all a flashing check engine light means is there is a catalyst damaging misfire happening.
