Well the issue started a couple of weeks ago, started by noticing that at stop lights the heater would not push as much heat out. Then today when I went to lunch no heat would come out even after running at full temp. Got back to work and looked at the coolant reservoir and it was empty and look at the oil dipstick and oil is just oil, I park it in my garage or in the same spot all the time and have not noticed any extra fluid on the ground when I move. So I leave work early and turn heat off and drive home, thermostat climbs as normal and stops just under halfway and stays like it should. Halfway home I decide to turn on the heat and it works like it should and the temp stays where it should. Get home and Move the TJ out of the garage and the KJ into it, pop the hood and feel the large hoses for the radiator and both are warm like they should be, and no fluid leaking from them, check the radiator and see no cracks or leaks on it. Look at the oil dipstick again and still no other fluid besides oil. Then I get out the floor light and start investigating and see fluid in spots that it looks like it would be coming out of the water pump at the ??pulley?? It is on the air box in a straight line, it is on the bottom skid in a line and it is on the starter and some black residue like burning is also on the starter. I put some more fluid in it and going to monitor it for leaks. So the KJ is a 2005 and has 106,000+ miles on it. Does this sound like the water pump? How hard is the water pump exchange out and what also should be changed? Tension and idler pulley and belt will be changed since all but the idler is original. |

Could be just "normal" evaporation. I had to keep an eye on the coolant level in my truck once I hit the 100K mark. Everything runs normally, I just had to top off the coolant every 6 - 8 weeks. |

I'm not sure if it 100% the water pump... I had the same spray of fluid around the engine bay. It leaks onto the belt and spins around. I was able to tell it was MY water pump because the wheel on the water pump wasn't spinning perfectly round, then when the accelerator was applied, in neutral of course, there was obvious coolant coming from the water pump. The water pump swap is super easy. I just changed the Serpentine and nothing else, cause mine happened at 63,500 miles (9/4/10). I also had my radiator leaking at 66,700 (12/3/10). I thought it was just a hose, but the radiator turned out to be under warranty (I was at the dealer getting other things taken care of and mentioned the leak). Clean the fluids up that sprayed everywhere, and monitor it. Good luck! |
