Post subject:  brake controllers...

ok. by friday I'm ordering the brake controller for the jeep.
I've narrowed it down to 2 choices...

Image
Hensley TruControl Gold II $257
Inertial brake controller

Image
MaxBrake $349
Hydraulic over electric controller

trying to decide which one to go with.

I like the fact the MaxBrake ties into the vehicle's brake hydraulics and gets an exact reading of how hard I'm pushing on the brake pedal. from all the reviews I've read about it it's pretty much bar none the best choice out there. it's also apparently the same style of brake controller that comes from the factory for some of the bigger trucks from Ford and GM.

The Hensley TrueControl Gold II however is a darn good intertial brake controller. it also garners excellent reviews and it has the added benefit of I know of at least one guy who had the prior Gold I version in his Jeep Liberty and it worked flawlessly for him while towing about 5500# behind his for thousands of miles.

while money is always an object I'm willing to spend more since i'd rather make this a 1-shot purchase and just get the best now. plus I'm going to be towing 5000#+ out back so why cheap out on something that could possibly cause massive damage to my stuff if it goes wonky.

I'm looking for people's thoughts on these two choices. I don't fear hooking into the hydraulics as I'm mechanically inclined enough to do it safely so you can factor out that part of the equation.

Thoughts?

I've had one or two hydro controllers, I really don't think they're that much better than a good tri-axis inertial. Out of the 6 or 7 controllers I've used, most have been Hayes, using a G2 on our 8 brake 5th wheel hauler and no complaints other than I wish the emergency lever was on the front left of the face instead of under it, but that's more so a grabbed habit

it's pretty easy to grab under and squeeze , I've just been used to using my thumb on them for so long I still try to activate it with my thumb

only one we truly had problems with was a voyager single axis inertial, it would sense load shifts, or very rough conditions and chirp the trailer brakes - also had it malfunction in the mountains and had to switch it to manual mode for the rest of the 600 miles home

I think you're on the right track, just don't discount Hayes from your options
