Nothing stolen, I don't even know why the would break the window but they did  So I send my wife to work in my Liberty so I can fix hers, The junkyards around here want 300 for the rear window so I decide that I would just pull the one off of the Renegade for now and get a new one for the Rene when I have a little extra money. Because my kids ride in this one I wanted to be extra sure that all of the glass was out of the interior so I broke out the shop vac and sucked all of the broken glass up, I went ahead and vacumed the entire truck as well as pulled the tailgate trim panel and even the spare tire off to get all of the glass out. Then I installed the window from the Rene, put all of my wifes stuff back in her truck, and installed the trim on the tailgate. The last thing I had to do was put the spare on which I did as well as the cover and just when I had finished and I stepped back to make sure the tire cover was on straight the new back window exploded!       The only thing I can figure is I tightened the screws through the glass too tight (although I don't see how as I just used a torx screwdriver.) Now I have to buy 2 new windows...

Is it possible that the lift supports somehow became over charged? That is the weirdest thing. I've had rear glass blow out, but only after I backed into a tree.

Too bad you don't live closer since I've got a spare back glass that the only thing wrong is the bar (that locks into the latch) that's made into it is a little loose. Something is binding up somewhere to cause the glass to shatter like that. I'd replace the lift supports and check the dimensions on the back window opening.

Either that or some punk kid is playing sniper with a pellet rifle    It seems very odd that the glass was fine until you finished everything up and then it shattered....was the glass closed while you were putting on the tire cover ?? just throwing this out there ...but could something be loose in the rear gate allowing the weight of the spare to pull out on the bottom edge of the window causing it to bind (loose hinge, latch, etc.) Like the bottom edge of the rear door tucking in with the weight of the spare on it and pulling out on the top edge ??? Sounds stupid I know but I've seen some strange things go down involving glass.

Sorry to hear this. We're gona see a lot more of this as time goes on with all the problems we're facing today.
I had my Lib. broken into about a year ago in front of my house in my driveway. Took some lose change and the portable gps in the glove box. Strange thing is, I "absolutely" am sure I locked it the night before and it's alarmed. When I found it the next day it was NOT locked. Whoever it was must have had some way to use the unlock code.

if you're saying you put the replacement in, weren't touching it at all and it just all of the sudden exploded, I'd say no one tried to break into it. sounds like you have some really weird gremlin. I like the struts being wonky idea too.

First you wreck one, not you've exploded two rear windows...Sure your just not accident prone? Glad you were not hurt by flying glass on the 2nd run. I'm thinking something with the strut too?!?!?!?!?!

Maybe the tiniest little piece of glas stayed hidden in the lower weather strip? That could cause a window to break...

With the junkyards wanting $300.00 for the window I decided to call glassmasters to see what they would charge and I couldn't believe it but it was only $150.00 and they came out to my house and installed it. The junkyard is crazy!! The new window is actually better than the old on in 2 ways, one it is factory tinted instead of the crappy tint that was on the Jeep when we bought and 2. It came with the small pad at the bottom to push the window closed with (I have been meaning to buy these from the Jeep dealer anyway)

basically that is what happened Tony, there was a small piece of glass stuck to the underside of the hinge and when I tightened the bolt down it was pushing down on the glass.

it would have almost been comical if they'd installed it and the 3rd one broke seconds after shutting it. :ROTFL: I would have just turned to the guy and gone "buy one get one free?"

glad you got it fixed though. wonder what one of those would run me up here...

Little of topic:

Tonka, I am looking for a tire cover like that, but cannot find a 245/75/16 anywhere. What tire size is that one on?

Tony the tires on that Liberty are 235/70/16, when I bought that tire cover I am not sure what size it is. I remember the guy at the Jeep Dealership telling me that it would only fit a Wrangler and not my Liberty. I will try and put it on a 245/75/16 tomorrow to see if it fits

Believe it or not...sometimes it's people from the junkyards that go around doing this vandalism so they can pull in business. I would never go to a junkyard. I'm sure they sell stolen stuff there. They can never be trusted.

I have seen that years ago when I used to put stereo systems in my cars and get them broken in to that junk yards always want a lot for glass. The reason is they don't sell much and they have to remove it and risk breaking it, if they break it then they have to try another car and they loose the time plus the glass. the other thing is some places price it high so you don't buy it unless you can't from other places. they don't want to bother with glass so much.
