Did a search and all I couold come up with was this..... viewtopic.php?f=1&t=46222&hilit=rear+bumper

Anyone know which type of method was used for the '02 sport bumper ?? Says in the thread listed above that the step plates/caps are held in by either melting some plastic tabs over or by some type of fastner. Looking at the replacement bumper covers none seem to come with these already installed :(

Step pads come as two pieces
should be ( unless they have updated the numbers recently)
left side 55155997AC
right side 5515996AD
and yes the clips are sort of melted on from the factory
or at least the two I have laying here are like that

Thanks Tom.... Anyway I could trouble you for a few detailed pics ?? :) I'm trying to figure out a way to remove them without breaking and be able to reinstall. Thinking possibly a heat gun (??) If the old bumper cover gets more messed up no big deal since it's being replaced anyway. Might be a way to heat the tabs and then bend them back over once they're in place .... i.e. heat the step pad tab while it's off the new cover then install it and while the tabs are still hot bend them back over, won't know if this is possible till I see how the tabs engage the bumper cover.

I have an 05 and literally just had them replaced last week, got rear ended. There are guide tabs all around the edge of both pieces. It is held on by double sided tape. On some they used epoxy also, but mainly tape around perimeter. make sure you prep the surface well if go the tape route. It will come up easily, as in my case after a few days. Good luck.

I called the stealership bodyshop and was told the tabs are supposed to be melted over with a "plastic welder". This was after I informed them that would be replacing the bumper cover myself and only needed the step plates installed, and asked directly about melting the tabs. they confessed that they usually figure new ones in the repair cost if doing insurance work, but sometimes they glue the used ones back with windshield urethane.

On a related note .....anybody know thw difference between "silverstone" and gray when it comes to bumper covers checked with the parts dept. and based on my VIN they said the correct cover was silverstone, not gray ??????.....
