I'm on the fence between the Thule Atlantis 1800 and 1600. If anyone has either would you mind posting a picture of how the fit on top of the Jeep. I'd also like your inputs on the following:

Any winds noise? If so how bad?
How steady is it at highway speeds? Does the front seem to far forward resulting in wind buffeting from the slip steam over the windshield or do you think the front of the box is far enough behind that point?
Do you have a wind faring or not? If so do you think it helps or not?
Rough idea on how much worse your MPG's are on the highway?
Finally, would you make the same purchase again? If not, why?

Thanks!

I just found this one and now I think the size will fit my needs better. It's the Inno BR440 Ridge Wide Roof Box. Has anyone heard of it? Are they made well? Good quality etc? It's 78.7" L x 37.4" W x 13.8" H.

I have both the 1600 and the 1800, the 1800 is a little longer than the 1600, I wish it was wider instead of longer.

I scooted mine pretty far back trying to cut wind drag.

Wind noise, not really all that much higher with the thule on.

Gas mileage, in my CRD I would drop from getting 24 to 25 down to 20-22 on the highway with it on.

On my XJ I cannot notice any difference in mileage with it on and off.

I ended up going with the Thule Atlantis 1800 and so far I’m pleased. I’m not pleased that I didn’t factor in the larger size with the inability to get it past the 90 degree corner to get it into my basement but that’s another issue :banghead:

So far I’ve only used it on one trip. I have it set up pretty far back – about 8” hanging off the back and the front of it is about 10-12" front the top of the windshield. I’m thinking about pushing it back even further – there are no issues with clearing the rear glass. I honestly can’t hear that much more noise when it’s on, in fact, with just the bars it makes more noise than it does with the rack on it. However, the sunroof makes lots of noise if I open it. In terms of gas it’s too soon to tell but on day one with lots of cross wind the gas millage was down, on day two with no wind gas millage seemed about the same. Again – to soon to tell. I’m hoping if I can push it back far enough it might actually help the MPG’s. I get better highway millage when I have I have my 18’ kayak on the roof. Time will tell.

Sounds like exactly how mine is setup, sticking out the back and back from the windshield.

We've got a 11 cubic foot Thule ski/roof box (A Frontier I believe it's called)
up on the roof along with an old school Thule cargo basket.
The noise is not to bad after you get use to it!
Every now and then you do feel it when a strong cross wind hits the KJ.
Our Liberty also has a wind deflector fitted which helps considerably.
