Post subject:  Jeep Sputtering Issue

On the freeway today I was trying to pass around a slow moving car, hit the gas and my jeep starting sputtering and shaking and the check engine light came on and was flashing not a solid light, odd part was as soon as I let off on the gas the light stopped flashing. I ran it by the local jeep dealer and had them check it out, spark plugs look fine and no code pulled. Any ideas? I dont even know where to begin.

Any ideas anyone? It was sputtering a bit today also but no check engine or anything, could it be tranny slippage? It's only at higher speeds

Bad fuel or blocked fuel filter maybe? :?

I was considering fuel filter but why would it only be highway speeds?

Sounds like a fuel filter, maybe a missfire(ignition system, spark plugs, egr valve,02 sensor),clogged air flter, only at high speed?Everything is normal at idle and city driving?Starts fine?Any changes in the fuel milleage during the last days/weeks?

i d check the o2 sensor but i d be surprise it didnt send a code. plus you should have other signs if that was the case.but i d check it anyways just to clear my mind

You can also check your maf sensor to see if its dirty...

Might be many little things to verify, for sure hard to tell without any codes.

It is really difficult to figure out, I pulled the plugs and all gaps are correct. I'm still thinking either coil pack or fuel filter, weirdest part still is that it really only sputters or shakes during highway driving or hard throttle.

Without running pids (data streams) the following could cause/contribute to this issue:

-fuel pump
-injectors
-fuel system (lines/filter)
-spark plugs
-COP (coil on plug)
-PCM

or

-torque converter/transmission (shudder/slip)

I would be pissed it it was torque converter tranny shudder, I replaced my tranny with a brand new one 20k ago. I wish the flashing codes would stay so I could read it, when it shudders the CEL flashes check engine but I let go of the gas am it goes away.

It most likely isnt the transmission, I just listed it as its one of the possible things that can cause sputting like conditions. As for an accurate diagnoses the list I made are the possible culprits and you would either have to run pids to determine who is the actual culprit or become a parts changers until the problem is fixed. Other then that I cannot be of much help. :(

Still not sure what the issue is here, the plugs were gapped right, it might be a coil pack but without a code I can't tell which one and I sure dont want to buy 6 new ones! I guess im going to have to bite the bullet and get it looked at, the odd part is it really isnt sputtering as much as last week but it is still there, not getting any flashing check engines though.

Well to add to the mystery I gained a very odd new noise in my jeep today, when starting to accelerate or idling it has a rushing water noise? Sounds like it's behind the glove box?

Did you ever figure out what the cause to your issue was?

I'm having the exact same problem. I finally got the engine light to stay on and it came back with two codes, 300 and 301. I changed the plugs and gapped them. Also, I moved the coil pack on cylinder 1 to cylinder 3. Still had the problem, but the code jumped to cylinder 3, so I installed a new coil pack for the one that I thought was bad.

After all this, I'm still getting the flashing check engine light. Any ideas to what is causing the stutter. It only happens when the engine is put under load at around 2500rpm, i.e. mostly highway speeds and large hills.
