| Post subject: | Recalibrating Speed |
So I have been doing a lot of research lately about doing work to my riecently aquired KJ, like lifts, tires, skids, bumpers, etc... and I have not once seen how people get the speed recalibrated after a lift and large tires are installed. I have an 05 6 speed with 28k for miles on it and it has basically no sag... right at 19" in the front. So I probably wont lift it for a while, but I have been looking at tires because the ones that came on my kj suck, and I can see lincons scalp already. I'm not a fan of using GPS for speed feedback, so I'm wondering what everyone else does on here. My TJ was just a little gear in the transfer case. What is used to recalibrate a KJ; flashing, comp controlls, gearing? I don't want to regear, I don't ever plan to size up my tires that much and I drive way to much on the highway to sacrafice that much MPG. Thanks ahead for any response.

Adjusting the speedo in a KJ requires the DRBIII('02-'05) or StarScan('06-'07) to do a "pinion reset".Some years it can be done while others can not and some years(actually most) only allow for certian tire sizes and mostly only OE stock tire sizes.Of course a dealer only thing as some will have no idea what you are talking about. This is mostly done for the trans shifting which greatly helps in the effect of power and overall driveablity. |

So everyone is just running without recalibrating then I'm guessing? I think I'm going to change from 225/75/r16s to the other OE 235/70/r16s which are basically the same profile for the speedo to read. I really just want 2 inches of lift anyhow for clearence over snow and assent/descent which I can get from a cheep OME lift. I don't need a rocker or anything special so The stock tires should do fine if I go a little wider. I have read a lot of the lift stickies, faq, and duscussions. I think I will go with OME in the end... Only about 2" or so... and maybe arms if they are necessary for ride quality... Or I might just get or fab something to drop the arms or whatever. I don't really know.. If I stick with 235/70/r16 and go with 2" of lift do you think the arms are necessary? |

Don't think you can say everyone is going without recalibrating their speedos as most of us do. Also you can go to 245-70-16s when stock with no or almost no rubbing. Most times I think almost everyone finds that the 245-70s are closer to the right mph than the 235-70s ( which were stock size on mine) |

Thats cool. If the price difference is minor on the 245s for a set of Generals I may get a set. I'll be getting all 5 of course if I size up which is gunna be around $700 I'm guessing. Then another $800 or more for a lift... KJ's are expensive compared to my old TJ, but it feels so much nicer on the roads, and gets better MPG. I also don't have to worry about leaks anymore!!! |

I have 235/70s on mine right now and they look a little small with the OME lift (I went from 18" to 22"). I have wheel spacers and mine still hit the little air dam at the bottom of the front bumper when turning and backing up. Just an FYI in case you have any concerns along those lines. |

Megalos any pics? With your OME lift did you change your arms? Also seeing how you have the 6 speed and your sig says you have husky liners do they get in the way of the clutch at all. The pics from Husky looks like they incorpriate a foot rest into the liner and I just wanted to know what you think? |

Go with 245/70s like what mudd said, thats what i had on mine before the lift n new tires, had no rubbing what so ever with the 245/70s when i was stock too and your speed reading will be fine with those tires |
