This front bar was on my Liberty when I bought it. The salesman said he thought a winch had been on it at one time but wasn't sure. Sorry for my ignorance, but is this a winch mount, or if not what is it? I like the ability to put shackles through the holes to attach a tow strap if needed, but was curious about it.

looks to be a tow bar or something so the jeep can be towed from a RV or something

I've seen some draw-bar systems where they are just a beefy as a recovery point and there are some others that use rather flimsy attachment points where the system bolts to the frame.

If yours has a good frame-mount, then the crossbar looks fairly strong. You would probably be okay using it for recovery in an emergency.

When in doubt, you want to have a qualified person inspect it, like at a knowledgeable off-road shop or a towing/hitch store (if there's a good one near you).

Dan

Thanks guys. I hadn't thought of towing, now after a search I found that it's a baseplate for a Blue Ox towing system. Here's a link to the install directions:

http://www.aemfg.com/pdfs/BX1122.pdf

Page 2 shows the mounting points, the end of page 4 shows the hardware. Not sure how strong this would be considered, it's bolted through the frame with backing plates so seems like it would be reasonably strong.

Used mine numerous times to pull Fords out of stucks. Well, ok once for me also. Works fine, but realize it is to tow with so don't go crazy.

Blue Ox Base Plate for being towed behind the RV. Our 07 has the same one. Yours is a bit odd because the bumper looks to be hanging over where the pins go. It also doesnt have the wiring. Maybe it was going to be used behind an RV but never was ???

The bumper flap can be tucked above those receptacles, one was that way when I bought it. Maybe this one was for a different year and didn't fit quite right, not sure. Like I said, I'm kind of glad it's on there so I have attach points for shackles, prefer that to tow hooks.
