I've read all kinds of stuff here on the above subject. I got some questions.

So if you put longer shocks on the "unlifted" and flex, the spring could come out?

Won't all shocks top out? I mean, a longer shock will give more travel, but...can't it still top out?

Anyone with the lift spacers or longer springs had a spring pop out with the longer shock?

Do yours "Knock" when they "top" like mine do?

Since the Rancho RSX listed most on here is for the stock 2002 Durango 4x4, could you use the ones for the same vehicle lifted part#RSX17306(even longer) without your springs popping out on a lifted KJ or would it then have a bottom out problem?

How many "top" / "knocks" does it take to get to the center of a tootsie roll shock? (tear it up)....ask Mr. Owl

Lol, my stock shocks would pop like crazy when they would top out. I always thought it was the spring re-seating its self but i guess it was the shock.

I guess it would be nice to know if those folks who had the springs pop out had the sway bar attached. Don't really understand how it allows much more flex if one side is stuffed.

I popped my rear spring out, but probably because I didn't install the bumpstops...

Calvin56,

So your Franken Lift has spacers in the rear? I know that lift comes with springs and a bumpstop.

Didn't know another bumpstop was needed with the spacer lift only.

no spacers on a Frankenlift...it's just coils..uses the factory spring perches and all, it just comes with an extended bump stop to keep you from popping the fender flares off and shooting springs out...only the front strut uses a spacer...and they're already pre-assembled....no spring compressors...pretty cool stuff :D

I know about Frankin lift...thats why I had a wink.

I guess I'll answer my questions.

Q) Won't all shocks top out? I mean, a longer shock will give more travel, but...can't it still top out?

A) YES, depending on tire size (diam) and how stuffed it is on the other side.
No, if its the right combo.

Q) Anyone with the lift spacers or longer springs had a spring pop out with the longer shock?

A) NO, If it was the right combo.

Q) Since the Rancho RSX listed most on here is for the stock 2002 Durango 4x4, could you use the ones for the same vehicle lifted part#RSX17306(even longer) without your springs popping out on a lifted KJ or would it then have a bottom out problem?

A) Edwin (lonestarlost) says will probably bottom out...could be.

Q) How many "top" / "knocks" does it take to get to the center of a tootsie roll shock? (tear it up)....

A) The world may never know, get one with a lifetime War-N-T

I pondered this: I guess it would be nice to know if those folks who had the springs pop out had the sway bar attached. Don't really understand how disconnect allows much more flex if one side is stuffed.

My conclusion is: Unless you are running a really small diameter tire like 25", I can't make the swaybar a real factor.

I'm gonna have to do the math and figure out what the right combo is.

Removing the rear sway bar does give more flex & travel. I removed the rear bar on my XJ and gained almost 4" more travel. With the swaybar when one tire stuffs up the bar trys to take the other tire with it, that tire will then lift off the ground. Without the swaybar when one tire stuffs up it can cause the other tire to drop even more (think twisting leverage). When I still had the rear swaybar on, if I drove one rear tire onto a car ramp (about 10" tall) it would cause the other side to start to lift. Without the bar I can drive that same tire onto a 24" rock and the other side still stays on the ground. That is with leaf springs, the KJs three link should flex even more.

I wont remove the Libertys rear swaybar though, it's the wifes rig. She likes to take corners a little to fast.

Blade, I'm gonna have to try this. I still don't understand unless you have a rubber flexible axle, how this can be?

If its the body pulling it up, I think I get it. (Body Roll)

So it ain't really suspension "Flex", its the body rolling more.

Thanks for helping me understand.

Yes, it is suspension flex, the body may roll alittle more with the sway bar off and flexing, but not much.

"but not much"

I agree with that. If my fenders are already sitting on the tire on one side with the sway bar connected, Whats it gonna do for me to disconnect?

It only works if you have the fender and bumpstop clearance. It works great on my XJ (can fully stuff tire into wheelwell), but I think I would eat the fenders on the KJ if I tried it.

Think one side pushing up, the other side pushing down, the swaybar will try to balance them out. Without the bar one side can push all the way to the bumpstop, other side will drop as far as the spring/shock will allow.
If the shock is longer than the spring, the spring can fall out. If the shock is to short it limits the down travel (clunk sound) but will hold spring in.
If you can get just the right shocks, you can get max drop, without loseing the spring.

I would post some "with / without " pics, but I'm still trying to set up my new cardomain page. For some reason there is no upload/browse screen like it shows in the HELP screen.

The kj does stuff the tire into the fender well about as far as it can go, but with the sway bar off, it lets the other tire drop "down" further. If I ever take my rear sway bar off, I would kill the fender b/c I do not have the extended bump stops that come with the franken lift, when I get bigger tires I may need to get them even if I never take the sway bar off.

The only thing the sway bar does is make the other tire do what its doing. If one tire goes up, it takes the other tire up with it. This will help body roll when going around curves. The front works the same, just alot better. That front sway bar is huge, I guess b/c the jeep is so short.

The first thing I did when I got home was remove the rear swaybar. It does make the rear end a bit squirrelly around turns on some of the backroads near where i live. I had to teach my fiance how to drive with it off, and she adjusted well.

Does it flex more when stock with it off?

Yes.

When one wheel stuffs with the swaybar attached, it pulls the other side up with it. This is helpful on the highway because it limits bodyroll.

If you take off the swaybar, when you stuff a tire the otherside is not pulled up by the control arm; therefore, the unstuffed side will be allowed to drop as far as the shock will allow.

Correct, knew all that. I was just wondering how much the rear sway limited flex.
