I think it can do the job,but it always depends on your needs,what you want to carry in it,the size you want,the only thing i d be afraid is the rebounce effect of that type of grill,but you can and i suppose you would put some crossbars to make it stronger.

But yes i think it could be an affordable do it yourself project,just the fact of building it yourself is worth every penny. :wink:

One of the first baskets I had, I made out of store fixture material!
Grid wall!
Worked very well and looked good too!
In fact, it looked so good, someone wanted to buy it from me!

After buying all the parts you need to 'finish' off making your own, you'd have about the same money into to a DIY basket as you would if you picked up one of these: http://www.discountramps.com/roof-rack-basket.htm
