Has anyone had experience with the paint on the KJ bubbling ? See picture below... This is on the back of the KJ above the rear glass... It doesn't look like there are any rust holes/scratches or anything that would have let water in... What's up with the bubbling paint here ?

x2, left and right of the third brake light and on the inside of the swing gate on the latch side. I scrapped sanded and primed the three areas. Still need to topcoat. This issue around the brake light area seems to be very common, must be a manufacturing defect common to pretty much all years 2002-2007. I think the warranty is for "rust through" only. |

JEEP 'repaired' it under warrenty in 2008. It came back...with a vengeance. This is imo not because of the third brake light. It's a paint error in the factory. The rust starts just like that in the middle of the panel. |

At least I'm in good company This is the only spot I've noticed it... can anything be done to prevent this from happening in other spots ? |

X5, in the exact same spot. No real rust issues other than right there. |

Same spots, took rear interior out to find it from inside,no luck, three layers of metal. Be carefull fooling with it,mine went all the way through outside. Need to be ready to complete repair once started. |

Angle grinder. Take out the rust completely. Then a very good rustblocker. Then primer. Then filler. Then red paint...Or line-ex. ![]() The weird part of this all: I have a dent in my roof where the paint was chipped off, somewhere in the middle/leftside. It's been there since 2004 and other then a little surface rust there's nothing wrong. But under the paint it rots? |

That seems a little intense I used to have the hi-lift mounted on my roof basket. A tree branch snagged it one day while at the Badlands and the hi-lift put a nice little dent/scrape in the roof taking off paint ( approx 8" up from this bubbling rust ). It's been like that for at least 2 years and through snow and rain without peeling But yea, doesn't make sense that this rust happens in an area without dents/scratches |

The only way to stop rust is to cut out the whole entire effected area and then some and weld in a new panel. I bedlined my entire roof,no paint bubbling problem here. |

Waxing every 4-6 months with good stuff, and washing once a week with good soap goes a long way! |

HoosierJeeper wrote: Waxing every 4-6 months with good stuff, and washing once a week with good soap goes a long way! Wouldn't have prevented this. This is rusted metal under the paint. Had to have been there before they painted it at the factory. I chipped the paint off, it flaked off easily. Scrapped, sanded the edges until I got to unrusted bare metal at the edges Taped back about 1/2 inch from that. Scuffed the paint Used POR15 degreaser and Metal Ready to prep the spot, let it dry overnight, then wiped off the area with a damp cloth. Put two coats of POR15 primer over the area - scuffing the finish in between still need to topcoat. |
