I got a an 06 Liberty and on the way home from the airport my A/C quit on me. The blower works great and Ive checked all the fuses and relays. So for whatever reason my a/c clutch/compressor will not engage. Is there some common problem with these systems that I havent discovered yet?
Any help or suggestions would be great as I am reluctant to take this thing to the dealer.

You could try buying an AC recharger kit at any auto parts store before you try anything else. They're usually around $35.

That is the last thing you want unless you really want to spend some big $$$ next summer.

Take it to a AC shop, most do not charge that much to find the issue, seen most around $80-$100 plus the cost of any added R134A.

thanks, and I already tried to add some R-134 but without the compressor working I cant add anything. I was hoping somebody has already had this problem and found out that it was the low pressure sensor or something easy like that. Ive got a Haynes manual so Ill do some reading at work today and hope for the best. any other advise would surely be appreciated.

Turns out that Haynes manual doesnt have a whole lot in the diagnosis area. I replaced the 2 low pressure sensors and had no luck. It turns out the compressor clutch is dead and they dont sell just the clutch. Now I have to go buy a $400 compressor. Not thrilled!

You will need more then a $400 compressor. You also must replace the orifice tube(a whole line on the KJ) and the reciever/dryer to have a warranty on the new compressor. Then you must have the proper setup to vacuum the system down and fill with the correct amount of R134A.After all said and done your looking at almost $1000 in parts and tools to DIY,would be about $1000-$1400 at a shop then you really got a warranty, even on labor.

it turns out this is a pretty common problem on these Jeeps. I had a mechanic friend go a couple of junk yards and they laughed at his request. They said they are completely sold out and dont know of any available unless you buy new. My mech said he could get his hands on a factory clutch (he thinks) and then install it without taking the whole A/C system apart. So he is gonna call on Mon and see what he can find out. Im not gonna try to replace the compressor and dryer and evaporator and all that other stuff, my A/C was working great and not having any problem blowing cold so I hope I can just get away with replacing the clutch for $500 (his quote). I'll keep ya posted on my progress.

BTW, tjkj2002, thats a pretty nice Libby you got there.
