Post subject:  Replacing a thermostat?

Hi guys,

I think I need to replace my thermostat. Couple weeks ago I wasn't getting any hot air from the heater and the engine temp was in the red. I checked the coolant, it was almost nonexistant so I filled it and had a working heater and the temp was in the normal range. It drove fine for a while. few days ago I was driving home and the temp went into the red, pulled over and was losing coolant.

Since it went for weeks fine then messed up again and has been ok since then, I think it's the thermostat. So....what do I need to replace it?

Thanks for any help.

You need to find the coolant leak 1st.A bad t-stat is not a reason for coolant loss or the heater not blowing hot air.

I had a hairpin leak at the thermostat. bought new pipes and a new t-stat plus t stat housing. You'll need the right coolant as well.
$100 job to do yourself.
You may need to replace the radiator.
Since I 'fixed' the leak i've noticed water coming from another area and just lightly sprinkling occasionally from a mystery location.
