I saw a 2005 Liberty,4cylinder,6spd with 4wd. Anyone on here have a 4 cylinder Liberty, are they fuel injected, what gearing? I did have a 4 cylinder Chevy Luv 4wd and it was good off road.
Thanks

no I don't know anything about the 2.4L in the Liberty, heck I have only every seen one on a lot and stayed away from it.

I had a Dodge Avenger with the Chrysler 2.4L engine. It's a DOHC engine with about 170bhp. It's pretty noisy and I didn't have too much luck with it. Very rough idle no matter what I did to it. Also, it's grossly under powered for the Liberty.

Doesn't anyone on this site own one? Would be a daily driver, very little off road use.
Thanks

Wouldn't matter if it was a DD or not, they don't have any power, do not get any more gas mileage than a 3.7 resell value is next to nothing

I don't think I would be interested. only 170 Hp from a 2.4L GAS 4 banger is going to be weak and not enough torque to pull the Liberty around well. If you want a 4 cylinder Jeep Liberty I think you will get way better performance and economy out of a CRD.

They are more rare and have some things you need to do to get them to be as they should be but for me that's been well worth it so far. I use My CRD as a DD.

I have an export 2005 Liberty,4cylinder,6spd with 4wd 245/75/16, OME lift, Boiler's shims and 4.11 gears.

If you are planning on driving up and down alone and thinking of gas millage then it should be ok. (if you are planing on driving it on paved roads, stock hight, without any off road gear on, no skids and OE tires).
The 6 speed manual compared to the 5 speed is a significant advantage.

Other than that, the truth is that for off road use, it is underpowered, even with the 4.11 gears.

Keep in mind that the 6 speed manual means that you can not engage full time on dry pavement. Hence when driving under heavy rain on the highway you can only drive 2x4

If I had to do it all over again I would get the 2.8 CRD. My :2cents:

Well they are acttually rarer then the CRD in that set up it is the 2.4L with 4.10 gears. Yes it would be underpowered to offroad but a gas saver in daily around town driving.

Thanks for all of the replies, they were enough negative ones to make me keep on looking.I really want a 2003,4 3.7 4wd 5spd.

I'd take it for a test drive, swap out my gears, and tell them I wasn't interested, lol.

Sorry to be late with this...

Don't listen to the theoretical nay-sayers, who have never even seen one.

I have had one since new in 2004. Its very reliable and very solid. Also, much easier to repair seeing as you could move a girl friend in to live under the hood.

Pros:

-It has 4.10:1 gearing from the factory which is, I'm told, the lowest that can go in the KJ's factory aluminum front diff.
-That aluminum front diff and the CVs are a real worry point of trail breakage on the KJ. With the 2.4l engine's reduced torque and horse power, your less likely to display your inards on the trail.
-It runs 32" tires fine so long as you live in flat land country, are not a speed demon, and don't mind avoiding high gear altogether.
-Its a lot lighter weight in the front so your lift is less likely to sag even with a bumper and winch. I have the dreaded Rusty's lift kit holding up a KJ Backbone and a Superwinch 8.5. No significant spring sag in 24 months. For years before that I had an RRO kit and the stock springs held up pretty well in the front for 5 years.
-Its lasts and lasts. I just tic'ed over 250,000 miles on stock engine and drive train. Seems to me the 3.7l Liberty with auto trans isn't known for that kind of longevity.
-Its does get better gas economy. On the Hole in the Rock trail in Utah, every other rig I was running with had to carry gas cans and use them on the way out. I gave my gas to some poor sensored word who didn't have enough. After reaching the pavement, I drove 45 miles to Mexican Hat, before I had to gas up. The same applied to Dusy Ershim. I came out the Kaiser Pass end and drove to Fresno before gas was needed.
-New and stock it got 27 mpg on the highway. With the lift, tires and extra weight I get 19 mpg.

Cons:

-It IS under powered.
-I off road a lot and sometimes I wish for a little more power on the steep inclines.
-Did I mention that it's underpowered?

Add timing belt under "con's" and the 2.4 I4 in general.Really not a good engine overall as I get the pleasure of working on many in neons and pt losers all the time, plagued with coolant leaks and bad cam sensors.
