I've never heard such a thing before, but I have a couple of friends that were insistent on it and even said that it was dangerous to replace the shocks and not the springs. I thought springs were something that would last a long, long time (maybe even life of vehicle) and shocks would wear out every 40-50k or so. I have about 60k on my rear springs and shocks (frankenlift OME coils and rancho shocks). The shocks have been rusting and one of them is pretty much completely shot, so I ordered a new pair of shocks and will be putting them on as soon as they show up. I thought I'd check just in case they are right! (side note: front struts were just replaced recently - but I'm 99% sure the shop just did the shocks in them and not the springs) |

With OME coils you will most likely have the KJ fall apart before they need to be changed, |

I switched out my OME 927s/948s at 100,000 miles on them they had sagged some but not bad, I just wanted to try some other setup After I took them off mine we installed them on Wildmans KJ ( of course they are not getting much use right now but...... ) Now your friends are more than likely thinking of stock springs which yes you would need to upgrade |

Not an upgrade or anything, just a normal "shocks are worn out, need new ones" repair. Is it normal and expected for springs to be replaced at the same time as shocks when it's a normal wear+tear replacement? Or do shocks get replaced more often and springs only replaced in a rare occasion? Like, if I went into sears and they saw that my shocks were worn out, would you expect them to say "you need to do the springs as well, it's bad to only replace the shocks" or would that be an unlikely thing to hear? |

That is the first time I have ever heard that springs should be replaced when it is time for new shocks or struts on any vehicle! For the average motorist who owns a Liberty (And not an automotive enthusiast like all the members here and on other KJ/KK forums) a large percentage don't even relize that their shocks are even worn out! Let alone the coil springs! I have even asked all the service advisors at the local Chrysler dealership we deal with periodically if they ever have KJ owners enquiring about their suspension. And the only thing they mention is that the occasional customer asks how often their Liberty needs new shocks! One of the dealerships service advisor didn't even relize that the factory coil springs bag out by 50000 to 60000 Kilometers! |

Neither springs nor shocks need to be replaced unless they are worn out. These components do work together but they do not necessarily need to be replaced together. |
