Hey everyone, How are things going?

I did some serious modding yesterday to my front fenderwells, knocked down the pinchweld, and cut up that liner pretty good. My question is, the liner attaches to the flare, with these little rivet like things, but the backs of the rivets flare out like drywall anchors, not a typical rivet. What have all of you used to replace these rivets? I drilled mine out, and I hate using them again, because they are a one time use thing. Anyone come up with something better/reusable?

Thanks,
Chad

Sheet metal screws or aluminum pop rivets?

When I lost a few of the wheel flare fasteners, I picked up a pack of plastic "threaded" replacements of the correct diameter at the local auto parts store. I just pushed them in and they have been holding strong for over two years.

Sadly, I tried both aluminum pop-rivets and the plastic push-in fasteners. The rivets would have to be huge to make it work, and once again, they are a one time use, but hey, a pack of 50 rivets was 6 bucks. There are only 5 holes on each side, so they would be workable. As for the push-in fasteners, I trimmed heavily on the fenderwell liners. They didn't work as I hoped.

I am thinking that maybe a bunch of jam-nuts with some bolts would work best. They would certainly stick out more, but they are removable, and more easy to maintain.

And to think, I still have the back wells to do yet.... :D

Napa sells the replacement plastic rivits. I'm at work so I don't have the # with me, but I'll find it tonight and post it.

Hmmm, not Napa, Carquest auto parts. Anyway 3/16 plastic rivits, part #8171027. Looks like they have lots of locations across the US.

Hope this helps,

DonC

Well, I stopped by my local dealer. I know a lot of the techs working there, and I got hooked up with about 20 or so of those clips. Let me be the first to say, they are complete junk. I even borrowed the tool from the dealer to install them, and most of them broke.

I have decided to get speednuts, and clip them over the fenderliners and use real screws. Those plastic rivets are a nightmare!!

Interesting. Had them on mine for about 2 years now with no issues.

They're great until you try to take out your fender liners. One time usage for them. Something with threads seems more practical to me, but from the DC point of view, its probably all about cutting cost.

I'd be careful about using anything metal to hold the flares on. My rear tires rub enough when flexed that they've actually worn a few of the plastic rivets down to the point where they've fallen off. If those had been metal screws instead of plastic I'm sure they would have worn nasty grooves into my tires.

Yeah, I do agree with you. I will most likely get nylon screws vice the metal ones. Good advice though...!!
