Post subject:  Help with rear diff.

Hi im new to the jeep world. I just bought an 2002 liberty limited 4x4. I want to change the front and rear diff fluids. My liberty has select trac. Can I use mobil 1 75/90 gear oil? Or what kind should I use? Also do I need to put a bottle of friction modifier in the rear? I dont know if I have a Track Lok rear differential.

Thanks.

Front uses API 75/140 synthetic GL5 gear oil, 1.25 L.

Rear uses API 75W90 gear oil, or 75/140 synthetic GL5 for towing/hard use, 2.1 L.

Use friction additive in the rear IF you have trac-lock, see axle tube for sticker stating if you have it or I believe you can request the info from a dealer of through Jeep.com via your VIN.

If you can wait a little while, you can buy Amsoil Lubrication products through this site.

JJ is correct. In addition, the transfer case does not use gear oil. It uses ATF preferable AFT4. All the information you need should be in the owners manual in case you want to double check or forget.

Mine is green and says KJ 8.25 open case. Im guessing it doesnt have Trac-Loc? Its a select trac. Should I add the friction modifier?

If you bought the Liberty new it should have it on the window sticker too. Mine said LSD on it.

It took me a little over an hour. Im really enjoying my KJ. Ive added a Yakima MegaWarrior and a MOPAR hitch so far. I changed the oil, plugs, filter and flushed the coolant as well. Im moving to Northern California in a couple of weeks from North Carolina. I will be pulling a small trailer with my Harley on it so I wanted to make sure the KJ is in good shape for the 3000 mile trip. Any other things I should do to prepare the KJ for the trip? Ill post some pics of my KJ tomorrow. This is a really great site you guys have here.

Jack it up and check the ball joints. Make darn sure they are Ok before that long drive.
Then when you get to Nor-Cal, check out the L.O.S.T. KJ Norcal Group. :)

Well I just checked the front wheels and they dont have any play. It was pretty hairy tho. My floor jack is broken so I had to use the stock KJ jack and its dark outside  Ill get a new jack tomorrow and check all them again.
