So i was looking at my roof rails yesterday and notices one was wobbly... after further inspection I realized the rail wasn't loose, the studs seemed to be broken. How should I go about fixing this. Can it be tack welded and then use silicone to seal? will the head liner need to be pulled down ( i have the sky slider roof). If I dont pull the headliner down, do you really think i run the risk of a problem with just a few tacks? I have been around a while, but I am looking for some innovative or easy solutions. I want my rails to be sturdy and safe!

It all depends on the damage. YOu need to take the rail off and look at it. if you use a flat head screwdriver to pry up it may cause enough pressure to force it to tighten or loosen, however, if it does not, then you will have to cut it off.
When mine broke, it actually ripped the sheetmetal in the roof and we had to go in from the bottom with nuts bolts and washers with roofing cement to seal it when we installed the gekko rack. pain in the butt. if it is only one and it is just loose, I would try to pull up and tighten it to make it grab. as far as welding it, you would have to disassemble it and grind and whatnot, but there you risk the nutzert falling out if it is totally ripped as mine was.

well i had one rip the sheet metal int he past, it was welded and grinded. on the same side these ones are loose. I have taken the rails off... and the studs do wiggle A LOT. maybe i'll pull it apart and take pics. There's a tool to fix the studs? and by pulling on it and turning how does that tighten or loosen? the rails come off fine. the issue is the studs wobbling

by pulling up it may give you the tension to tighten them tighter with out spinning.
As for the studs getting loose, the obvious thing is dont overtighten them, but mine broke due to wheeling and flexing the body. don't know if you wheel a lot or not.

mine tore from wheeling with a hi-lift up there. the mount slipped and put the weight sideways so the 40lb jack was bounses pulling the points outward ( the weight wasnt down it was out
