Post subject:  Jeep Liberty, A woman's vehicle?!

I just turned 16 in August and I'm looking at the Jeep Liberties for a first car. I'll probably a 2002 (Sport maybe Limited) or somewhere around that. I told a few of my friends and they kinda raged on me about it being a woman's car. I've always thought it was a very masculine sporty vehicle. I thought I'd come to the Jeep Liberty experts at this site to help me out with this problem. I also did a little googling and found a lot of other people calling it a women's vehicle.

On a side note what does 'KJ" stand for? I new to the site and jeep terms in general.

Its definitely a womans only vehicle lol :juggle:

Actually Ive read alot of that crap on other sites and heard it from a few of my friends from college that never saw my vehicle and owned 2wd 2door wranglers. As far as for anyone that has seen my vehicle in person, ridden in it, or driven it ive got nothing but major compliments. This is coming from guys and girls both. Most of them drive very high end vehicles like Range Rovers, BMW, or Mercedes. One guy restores classic muscle cars. So, i have no problem with my little ladies liberty if a few people on line that never been in one talk trash haha. actually i wouldnt care if everyone i knew hated it either...i like it and thats all that matters. its been back and forth across the country 3 times, driven off road, hauled stuff, pulled trailers, and held up better than any vehicle ive ever owned

As for the haters, the reasons ive heard for the ladies suv is because its not a solid front axel...there are only a small handful of suvs still sold that are. also they say it is too rounded unlike the old cherokee. I liked the old cherokees and i like both generations of the liberty as far as body style.

What do you think about it being a first car? Well I mean I had a 95' mustang for about a month but I sold it for a profit because I figured I'd like this better. It was kinda between this and an xterra.

get it with the stick shift, tow 5000#+ behind it, THEN ask people if it's a girl's vehicle. :ROTFL:

in general though, I don't really care. I bought it because it suits MY needs and does everything I ask of it... so far. (except get great gas mileage. but I have a motorcycle for that, so it all evens out in the end.)

Cant tow 5000lbs with the manual.

KJ is the chassis code for the 2002-2007 liberty.

As for being a "girl car"...well first off its not a car its a jeep and second off if I had a nickel for every vehilce I was told or read about being a "girl car" I would have been able to keep my KJ. It seems every vehicle known to man has had someone or some something state its a girl car. I would get what makes YOU happy and not worry about what others say, but then again I know how hard that can be at your age. If you want to go the easy route with a jeep then buy a wrangler....which btw has also been called a "girl car" by many many people when in fact its not.

One should make up his or her own mind concerning a a car, truck, whatever. I think you shouldn't care too much about other peoples opinion, it's your choice, some people just have a different taste.

My honest opinion:

You're 16, people will make fun of any car you drive. It will either be, too slow, look crappy, too fast; but build quality is questionable, girly, stupid, unreliable, stock, not enough low, not enough high, american, import, etc, etc, etc.

Do your research well, a 02-04 will most likely cost money to bring it up to proper maintenance and keep a good schedule maintenance, depending on mileage (fluids, tune-up, tires, misc repairs).

Next, how much do you drive? Can you really afford filling up the tank every 250-300 miles, depending on your average MPG. Depending where you live, I'd expect gas to be possibly a bit higher than last summer. Around here, it was $4.45 for 87. So lets say you need to fill up with 16 gallons, that's $71. That's assuming you could average 17MPG, at the end of 272 miles.

Not trying to discourage you or anything, but lets be honest, it costs a pretty penny to fill it up and keep it running good. That's not even including any kind of mods, or repair needed after a trail run, if you decide to take it off-road.

Unless you have rich parents or parents who are well off and pay for a lot of your day-to-day life (entertainment, gas money, allowance, school, college, etc). Then by all means get one :)

Otherwise, I'd look for something that will give a better MPGs, cheap to maintain, and still allow you to go out and enjoy other things. Instead of "darn, I just filled up 3 days ago!".

In short, live within your means and what's reasonable. Don't go broke on someone elses account.

In my opinion, a stock gas liberty is a girly truck. But so are all the small suvs on the market. A stock CRD, is half way girly. A liberty needs at least some beefy tires to bring it into the mans world.

Post subject:  Re: Jeep Liberty, A woman's vehicle?!

My woman drives ours cause I personally do not like it, but that's my preference and I have called it a girly vehicle too. There are some pretty stout Libbys on this site, JeepJK, etc that would change someguys mind.
Your friends are 16, what do they know anyways :ROTFL: :ROTFL:

Towing 5000#'s...yea, I wouldn't even consider it. I towed my 600-700# small box trailer with 3 goats in it and I could no way imagine towing much more, pushed the libby all over the road during heavy winds. I've hooked my 1800# flatbed with some stuff on the bed to it and it noticeably struggled with that. I'll stick to my fullsize for towing.

To expand on KJ code, it's like the Wranglers, most people know them by CJ, YJ, TJ, JK, just a factory code.

For a first car as brought up, do consider your "needs", gas, etc but don't throw "wants" out the door. I had a 72 Cutlass for my first car, big, loud, gas hog muscle car.....just want I wanted

Funny on a recent 500 mile trip down home and back I made a list of Jeeps
heres the totals
KJs total 22
men driving them 19
women driving 3
KKs total 11
men driving 5
women driving 6
Wranglers total 12
men driving 3
women 9
JKs total 11 ( 10- 4 door/1 -2 door)
men 0
women 11

So which is the chick vehicle ? Seems the JK is :ROTFL:

Oh and no men waved or anything , but had 11 women wave and two of them no wave but thumbs up.
Not sure if it was my KJ or just ......ME!!! :-)r

Define a girls vehicle? Just because some girls drive a liberty doesn't necessarirly make it a whimpy jeep. Your friends must be into huge lifted trucks to compensate. But in all honesty a libby is a great first vehicle to own. I'm very happy it was my first and 2nd one. If you want to try to beef up the look lift it, throw on some AT's and a roof basket for looks. A stock libby and a lifted liberty makes the world of difference in appearance IMO. (i'm 17 what do I know haha)

At age 16 when I first got my KJ:

A liberty is a great choice, if you do decide to get one just look around for ideas and advice on here or on jeepforum.com. You'll always get pointed in the right direction and the jeep community is a real great place. Good Luck!

I'm not really worried about Gas milage, my parents will mostly be paying for that, besides I won't be driving all over the place, just to school which is only about two miles away from my house and to friends houses. Reading all your replies have discouraged me a bit on buying one. I am mostly just looking for a sporty vehicle (like the liberty or the xTerra) that has good interior features (which the reason I don't like the wranglers is because they are so expensive and I can only find older ones in my price range which have very ugly and dated interiors.) What do you guys think of the Jeep Cherokees?

:?
Confused as to why you would be discouraged in buying a KJ
Who are you buying it foe, yourself or what others think
Having owned Cherokees I'd buy a KJ better ride, handling etc

Post subject:  Re: Jeep Liberty, A woman's vehicle?!

Apparently I drive a girls car also a guy in a mustang told me that no matter wht i did to the liberty it was still a B!t@H's car. This coming from a guy in a black 1996 v-6 mustang so I told him that if his sports car was so manly to do his best burn out and i would do mine. He laughed in my face when i made the offer and said it wasn't even worth his time. So i called him out and his g/f told him to go for it. Needless to say my armored CRD with 31's destroyed him and got a bunch of thumbs up. So yeah they may start off as a slight girly car but believe me they are alot more capable then people think. Mine stock was hanging with the toyota trucks on the trails and not short of some of the wranglers. So don't hesitate about buying a liberty they are nice reliable and well equiped for the price plus they are really safe.

This is my CRD

This is TJKJ2002 and USFACORPS

Basically what I am getting at is a KJ is what you make it and not what people say they are there are some female rigs on here that would make any guy drool. SO if you like it buy it i caught flak from my friends all the time but guess who now gets the calls to come get them out when the time come.
