Post subject:  Jeep Liberty 2002 speedometer problems

My speedometer is not working and if you have any idea on what it could be please reply.

Heres what i did so far and what i have been through.

I bought it used and took a test drive and it was fine. The mileage is 87114

After paying for it on the way home I tried the cruise control. Upon starting the cruise control the speedometer started to go crazy and the engine light came on.

I brought it to my mechanic and he changed the sensors in the tranny, both of them. Over the course of this problem they where changed four times.

My mechanic told me to bring it to the tranny place and of course they told me it needed a transmission. Come to find out there was no transmission fluid in it.

Still having the problem i brought it to a jeep dealer and he worked on it for a couple of weeks. The diagnosis is that he doesnt know the problem but it is working for now.

On the way home it happened again and i cleared the codes with my computer. It is now working but i have no confidence in it.

What can i do next?

Thanks,
Danny

The Jeep dealer worked on it for a couple weeks and don't have any idea what the problem is??

I say try a different dealership, that's pretty messed up. How long have you had it?

Once you get done replacing sensors and switches, it'll be time to get a new cluster.

I had the display on the left side (under the tach) go out about 3 months after I bought my Liberty. The 4wd was still functional, and so was the parking brake but the illumination (indicator lights) were very dim or non functional sometimes. The dealer replaced the following before ending at the cluster:

1) Replace transfer case switch = thinking the indicator in the cluster was still good and it was only a bad switch or short
2) Replace entire transfercase + parking brake switch = thinking the electronics in the T.case were causing the issue
3) Replace the cluster = Everything returned to normal.

The speedometer is digital so if the sensors have been replaced, the next thing I would look at would be the cluster itself. ~Good Luck

Check the rear wire off the diff, the e-brake cable will wear through it and short it out. Search thru the posts for a fairly long discussion on speedo failures.

I very sorry to hear this ctbuyandsell. Thers nothing worse than buying a new jeep(new to you) and you have this much trouble out of it. Sounds like its not the jeeps fault though, someones screwed it up purty good.

Like Jeepin Al said, check the speed sensor on the rear differential, they can get worn through and short.

I hope your not the one paying for all of this?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The speedometer went hay wire again, would come and go whenever it felt like it.
The last time it was a wire rubbing aginst the break cable. This time it was the censor in the rear end.dealer wants 30.99 for part and 80.00 for labor.I bought the part and took the Liberty in for a oil change and the guy while doing the oil change took an 3/8 rachet and took out the one bolt holdin it in and put it back before the oil had finish draining. What took the most time was getting the cable unpluged from the censor.
