I just have to say that every time I take Bullet out, I am more and more impressed with how she handles in all types of terrain! We have been in loose dirt, all kinds of mud, snow, ice, and water....I have yet to find a type of terrain that I don't feel comfortable taking her on. Ok, we haven't tried boulders, but I am not going there! (I am afraid of heights, and won't drive anywhere that I can't see..lol) My point is that my KJ is so very capable as a 4x4! She certainly lives up to the Jeep insignia!

We already knew that, and Bullet can do rocks also, if you let her.

Yea, yea, :P I know I am not saying anything new...hehe. But it had to be said. I might try rocks someday when I am more confident in my skills, but rocks are not very forgiving, and I like LOTS of room for driver error! LOL. (I will learn on Waggs cause I dont care if I smash him up a bit.)

SWEET another newbie. LOL no-offense, I'm still being amazed by my KJ everyday. We just had at least 4-6 inches of rain here this week, and since it is mostly farm country here, with some rolling hills... needless to say there is alot of mud and hills to climb. I went truly off-roading/trail riding, for the first time this week. ( in the middle of a 2 day long down-pour ) I'll be honest and admit I wasn't expecting much with the BFG AT/KO's but they sure out do my stockers.

Alot like you I actually look for instances/weather conditions to test the liberty in! :)

Yep, I am definately a newbie... :P I have always wanted a Jeep, but until the KJ, couldn't find one that I liked that would also fit my family. I am learning tho and learning fast. Before long, I will be the most KJ savvy chick in all of Oregon!! When you are green you grow, when you are ripe you rot!

I'm a newb too !!! 38 and counting !!!

I've got the stock skid plates on order ( can't really afford the aftermarkets now with wedding coming up ... and I still have to tell the SO about these :D )

once I get those slapped on ... I'll be doing a bit more than snow piles and such ... I have some weekends @ the trailer coming up .. so a few brush runs are in order ... I'm thinking I could try and price out some rock rails online and "accidentally" press the purchase button ... what do you all think?

lol....yea well, just don't push the purchase button toooo often if you want to actually make it to the alter!! lol. I spent about $600 on Bullet in the last month just pushing the purchase button! It would have been more if I could have gotten the Frankenlift I want!! I keep saying "everything in moderation....everything in moderation..." That is of course right before I push the button!!! :-)r

Rock rails are an investment! They cost $X, and you can keep them as long as you want and re-sell them at $X - 20% or so if you ever decide to.

If they get damaged, just assume that damage to the KJ would have cost more to repair!

Would you suggest armor prior to lift, or lift prior to armor? I also have a bad habit with the purchase button.

I would always go armor first .. cause no matter how high you go ,, you always want to drive over something higher ...

YES armor always first there are some very expensive parts under there

Author:  dano104 [ Fri Mar 10, 2006 6:58 pm ]
Post subject:

Is there a particular order I should follow with armor? I'll be buying it one piece at a time.

Post subject:

if you dont have big $$$ for armour get the mopar units not too expensive and they cover the vitals

Which ones are more important than others?? Gas tank skid? Oil pan skid? I have been wondering the same thing myself. I want to start with the most important pieces and go from there....ya know just so I don't overuse the purchase button. Much like my credit card, I think it is wearing out!!

I just heard something crazy! Our gas tank is plastic, I think I'll armor that first. I just noticed I allready had a motor skid. So I believe this will be my order

1. Gas tank
2. Tranny and transfercase
3. rear Diff
4. boulder bars.
5. LIFT THAT SUCKER

All assuming my wife is down with it. :)

Yes, they are "plastic", but from what I hear they are pretty tough so it depends on what kind of wheeling you are going to be doing. I am definately going to get the plate for that, but I have also heard from Heather at All J that you can shear off the drain plug and really cause damage!! Since I mud more than anything else, I am thinking that may be the way to go first. Can't see an oil leak in the mud very well, but you can always smell gas!! Six of one, half dozen of the other I suppose. I am going to keep collecting opinions and then make my decision.

If you're working the budget, go ahead and get the Mopar skids. They are really inexpensive and strong enough for many users. Kilby, All J and others make some very strong armour, but if you're not sure how extreme you're going to get they are possibly more than you'll ever need. While you're learning what you want to do, the mopar skids will do you fine.

As for rock rails, scrape together the cash and call up All J for a pair of Boulder Bars. Some other shops have started turning out good looking rails as well, but there are some that are just not worth the cash.
