Post subject:  Problem with guages

I unplugged my guage cluster to take it apart and put some aluminum bezel in it. When I finished and plugged it back in everything appeared fine. I turned the power on and they lit up...the gas guage returned to where it should be and the odometer was correct. So, put the dash all back together and thought i would turn the jeep on. Realized the spedometer and tach no longer work!! Im freaking out a little. Any way to fix this? I have taken the guages out of a few other cars and never ever had an issue. is it possibly something simple like a blown fuse somewhere...never had this happen before. I should probably add to this that I was in a hurry because it was raining and I was in the middle of doing taxes and it slipped my mind to disconnect the battery. which is why im freaking out a little now...im thinking i toasted the guage cluster when i did that. if that was the case though would everything else in the cluster work like that??

Im thinking tomorrow when its light out I will disconnect the battery for a while then reconnect it and hope everything magically starts working again. if you see the needle positions...they jumped up to those positions when i unplugged it.

btw, here is what i screwed things up to do. It was a bigger pain than i thought. firstly, or cluster is sealed so you have to crack that clear plastic cover off. Secondly the bezel was not close to fitting properly...lots of sanding to get it in decent fit. looks much better in person...its brushed aluminum.

Try pressing and holding the trip odometer reset when you turn the ignition on. This will put the gauge cluster into a self test mode. Al of the gauges should sweep and return to their normal position. All of the idiot and warning lights will be tested as well.

Hold the trip odometer button when you turn the key on, this will make it run through a self test mode that will make the gauge cluster cycle through the various positions....ie a full needle sweep.

fixed...lesson learned. dont do this kinda work in the dark. i realized in the morning the needles had spun all the way around. when the would try to move the little pin that keeps the needles from dropping below zero where now on top of the needles and blocking them. took the guages back out let them spin back to normal zero position and reinstalled it all. works fine now. thanks for the suggestions.
