Serious problem.Today while driving my jeep liberty 2006, the engine just died and refused to restart. On checking around i found some oil in the air intake and filter. Could this be the cause for engine shutdown and why did oil get in there?.

What exactly is going on?

Is it a No Crank condition? Engine does not even turn over?

Or is a No Start Condition? Engine turns over but does not start?

Did it die while you were driving, or would it not start after sitting?

This could be caused by a number of things. Were there any lights on at the time? Any chance the engine was overheated? Do you know if you're getting a spark at all?

Hi guy's the jeep was not overheating. I'm sorry for not explaining the problem from the beginning. Last week i struck the driver's side catalytic converter.I'm sure the ceramic is broken, i can hear it knocking. The idea was to have it replaced this coming week. I took her out yesterday for about 10 miles. On my return it died, and would not restart. That's when i found oil in the air intake.Could the damaged cat. be the cause of all my problems? and would replacing it solve the problem?. Thanks

That could do it. If it's completely blocked the excess exhaust pressure could prevent it from starting. Did you notice any rattling or other signs of a bad cat before it died?

yes i did have a loud rattling, and i know i have a broken Cat. (that is the ceramic broken inside) I have purchased a new direct fit Cat. and O2 sensors, which should arrive on Tuesday. I do hope with this replacement my jeep will start.

Do you think both are broken? Maybe someone else can chime in, but I would think that with one cat still functioning the engine would at least be able to start, just with much lower power.

Thanks for the advice, but would could have caused oil to enter the air intake?. I have not tried to restart the jeep since yesterday. I love my jeep and would hate to have her seriously damaged.

How much oil are we talking? The pcv valve has a small filter that will get oily on the right side of the box (left side of the jeep).

Well, you know the Cat needs to be replaced. So I would just go ahead and start pricing that out.

As far as the reason for the No Start condition. I would start with the basics.

Fuel - Start by checking ALL of your fuses. The PDC (Under the Hood) and the panel and the left hand side of the dash by the door. Make sure the pump is energizing. Purchase or borrow a fuel pressure gauge and plug it into the fuel rail. See if you have any pressure in the rail

Compression - Buy or borrow a compression gauge. I doubt this is the issue. But it doesn't hurt to check.

Spark - Using a multimeter check for source voltage going to the individual coil packs.

Check for Codes. Is the CEL light on? If so you go force the codes to be displayed through the EVIC on the speedometer.

To force the codes, turn the key from Off,On,Off,On,Off,On within 15 seconds. (Do not go to the start position)

Is the immobilizer light on? (Red LED in the lower left of the cluster) Does it blink? Or is it off.

My first thought is that the either the Crank Position Sensor or Cam Position Sensor had failed and is causing a no spark condition.
