I'm going to keep this post short, because it's pretty simple.

The Bureau of Land Management is working over proposals to drill for natural gas and mine for potash in Moab. The proposed area covers the majority of the trails that Moab is famous for, and while I'm sure they wouldn't all close down if this is allowed, you can be certain that a lot of them will be negatively affected. Wells and mines and all the things that go along with them would definitely damage the beauty of Moab as well. :furious:

See this BLM page for more info, and write/email/smoke signal everyone involved and everyone that you think should be involved so we can stop this from happening!

Moab is what it is because of wells and mines. Most all of the trails are old mine/well roads. Its a catch 22 look it up.

X2

I've been camping on potash road many of times near Moab. Some of the best jeep trails in New Mexico are old logging and mining roads.

Historically old mining roads turned into trails. Unfortunately with the current BLM Travel Management Program, it is very unlikely that new roads will turn into usable 4x4 trails.

IMHO, this Nation absolutely MUST get off foreign/hostile oil AT ALL COSTS! This means drilling here anywhere that it is safe and feasible.

This Nation's national security is the number 1 priority followed by the national debt.

Do you really want to place vanity over buying (adding to our foreign debt) dino oil from countries that support terrorists ?

Think about it my friend.

As someone with some pretty in depth and personal experience on the subject I can promise that National Security is high on my list of priorities, as is getting us off of foreign oil. However, it's a lot more complicated than just drilling more here.

Most of the oil we use comes from other countries. We drill a lot more in the US than we actually use (of our own oil that is, not total usage). Most of the oil drilled here in the US gets sold to countries that the first group of countries won't sell it to. It's all a very complex and highly political and profit driven system far beyond what I'd like to get into here, and goes above the level that I can call myself authoritative on.

Aside from all that, they aren't looking to drill crude oil in Moab, and any new mines and wells won't create anything that we, or any wheelers, bikers or hikers, will get to use. The old mining that left us our current trails was uranium mining that lost its profitability (in the Moab region) long ago. If they start drilling for natural gas and mining potash you can be sure they'll keep doing it till long after we're dead and when they're done they'll just put up a big fence and a "KEEP OUT" sign.

The only people that will benefit from this are the politicians &BLM people getting kickbacks and the mining/drilling companies.

...this!

Sucks that people will lose a wheeling trail or two, but domestic fuels > foreign.

We have plenty of oil - it just tied up in oil sands and not viable under $100/barrel
therefore just get used to $5/gallon gasoline - and it'll all work out.

actually I'm surprised the Utah is going for drilling - their big claim to fame is low sulfur coal
although Clinton - locked that up as payback for campaign contributions.......

Also remember that they're not looking to drill for oil in Moab, so don't think any drilling there will help "make the terr'sts go away".

Natural Gas wells are pretty compact

but if they start mining Potash.... well.... a big hole in the ground....
so we can have more fertilizer that we don't have to import from....... Canada......
