| Post subject: | Fuel Capacity |
I have been pushing my fuel tank to the limit lately to determine when infact I actually have an empty tank. In the manual it states that when the fuel light comes on there is approx. 2 gallons left. Well the fuel light came on, I drove for another 45 miles.... I was on the highway so I was getting about 21 mpg. When I went to fill up, the needle was below the red section of the gauge.... it took only 16.46 gallons or so, meaning I have approx. 3 gallons left still... even after running on 'empty' I am assuming there is either a good safety factor, or my gauge is off a bit.... any one else notice this type of behavior at all? |

Mine does the same thing. I think it's kind of nice. Not accurate at all, but handy. |

My 04 was the same way... I have not tried it on the 05 yet. |

Yes, my KJ seems to run forever on E. I have never actually looked at how much it took when I filled back up, but I do know that I have a long time after the warning light goes on and the needle reads below empty. Next time I fill up I will see. |

The most Ive ever gotten in mine was 17gal. That was after driving around 30miles with the needle pegged on E. |

The KJ has a reserve tank from what I've heard, I think it's a 5 gallon tank, but I'm not sure. Also, I think that up to '03 the total capacity is 18.5, '04 is 19.5, and '05 and up is 20.5. I'm not positive about those numbers though. |

I've got a 115 litre tank (30 gallons) and when the 'reserve' light comes on I've still got around 30 litres (8 gallons) left! Which is nice. |

the 2005 US brochure says 20.5 gallon the 2006 Canadian brochure says 78 Litres (17.1 gallon) i haven't paid attention but at typical prices here, it can cost $66 to fill and i've maybe come within $10 of that. cant wait till summer when it will be closer to $100 |

I typically put 18 in mine when the low fuel warning light comes on. The most I've put in was 19.5 gal in my 20.5 gal tank. Justin |

And here I am cringing when it gets close to $35 or $40. That sucks! |

Yeah, the most I've ever put in was about 110 litres, at $1.14 per litre. That's US$92 for a tank. Ouch! |

18 gallons is the most I've ever put in, but I've never run it around with the gas light on. It just freaks me out. Everyone else I know has trucks with 35 gallon tanks, so laughs when $20 will get me half a tank. |

I'm chicken to run it down too far when the light comes on. I hate running out of fuel. I think 16/17 is about the most I've put in. I just did a second mortage so I could fill up my diesel truck. Diesel is back up to $2.79 and more a gallon here. |

The question about when the light comes on and when the gauge reads empty: The engineers at Chrysler know that the general public rely on the reading from that gauge. This allows them to calibrate it so you don't run out of fuel. Same thing goes for the DTE meter in the EVIC. Most gas I have ever put in my tank was a little over 16.5 gallons. But I think I have a smaller tank than the rest of you (stock 02 was 18.9 then in 03 it went up to 19.9 IIRC) |

My 2005 has a 20.5 gal tank, and the most i've ever put in it was 18 and change, but that was running 20+ miles with the fuel light on. |
