What is better for just basically punching holes through nice 1/4" pieces of steel. I know a drill press would be ideal, but you can't put a drill press under the Jeep and I don't have the room for one.

Should I look at something like a 8 amp electric drill or a 1/2 air drill. I know make sure to use a good cobalt bit, but was curious which would punch through with less effort. I already nice size compressor that can run an air drill w/o a problem.

An air driill will be much better because it is capable of much higher RPMs. Get a good bit and some coolant/lubricant for the bit because with the additional rpms it will get hotter than with an electric drill.

A colbalt bit in an air drill with a 1/2" chuck will work best at a lower speed (colbalt bits are very good cutting bits but are not really high speed bits), and of course a good lubricant is always helpful.

Thanks guys. I just picked one up for 40 bucks and man it goes through steel almost as easy as the 8 amp electric drill goes through wood. It was actually kind of fun.
