Post subject:  Check your pinch welds, please

Good day fellow KJ owners. I have a favor to ask of all of you. Yesterday, Rock Lizard, USAFCOP, and I were working to install his prototype Sliders onto my KJ when we discovered an interesting error(quality control build) on my KJ. We soon found the same error on USAFCOP and KW_AV8R KJ's. So that was three KJ's from different years or regions of purchase. I would ask of you to check your KJ and post a message in here if you do or do not have the same issue.

Here is the issue we encountered.

On my driver side, where you mount your sliders to the pinch weld, the pinch weld was in pretty good alignment. On the passenger side, the pinch weld was way off (1/4"). Sloppy work. See pictures.

Look all along the pinch weld to see if you have sloppy work on one side, both sides, or even for both sides.

Can you see the sloppy difference in work?

This was an issue in mounting the template to drill holes on the passenger side.

I will probably grind down the excess hang.

THANKS ALL!

I'm off by about 1/16th of an inch on both sides.

David, does the difference even matter when mounting up Marty's sliders? I know my pinch welds are different, but with the Boulder Bars it really didn't make a difference. It's just annoying more than anything.

Joel,

There is no issue with the KJ as a whole. We just think it is odd that this seems to be a common theme on KJ's. The holes that need to be drilled will land really low on the overall seam and the bit will hit where the two parts are located making it harder to drill. Marty was thinking about changing out the bar, for the passenger side, that bolts to the seam to a larger one so the bolts will be higher on the seam. Lessening possible issues if pasengers use the slider as a step (downward pressure) all of the time.

We wanted to verify if this was common and if Rock Lizard was going to make a change to his slider. It sounds like people with BB's had to deal with the same issue.

So far, it seems that 1/16" is the common difference while mine is 1/4" difference from drive to passenger side. That 1/4" is significant on hole placement for the bolts. I will have to careful drilling where the seams meet or just grind down the excess lip.

Since I am RL's proto/beta sliders tester, he wants to make sure there are no issues for his customers when they have to install them. Hence why I am posting this to see if he needs to change his design for the passenger side pinch weld bar before he makes slider #2.

Okay, I am babbling and repeating myself now.

I'm on my lunch break right now (3 am, I know  ) so I can't really check right now, but tomorrow when it's light out, and hopefully not raining, I'll check for you.

I have an 05 and have about 1/8th inch showing on both sides. My guess is that this is looking inconsistant, so how you plan around that might need a lot of imagination. Good Luck.

Yes, mine are off on a 2002. Thats why I threw away the templates and clamped them in place while I drilled. I noticed it right away.

"I will probably grind down the excess hang." WHAT?

Creating a rust condition.

I seem to be the only one that put my plastic trim on ????

HERE IS A SUGGEShin: Put pins in the sliders where you can pull them out for step rails or push them in for rock rails. Other companies are doing it.

You shouldn't come on here and say "other companies are doing it" and not give examples. Post some pics and links to these companies.

Whats the problem? I put no examples on this subject, I have put examples on many other subjects. I'm happy with my bars. If you want examples, Google it. I don't need to post a link to make myself credible. I ain't trying to satisfy yall, it was just a suggestion to stay competitive since the market has already changed. But hey, you ain't "Rock Lizard" so you shouldn't care anyways.

Jeepster...I said give, not gave

Since I'm a "fellow KJ owner" I answered that.
