Never towed anything before so I'm a complete towing noob. I have a '04 KJ Limited 4x4 with the factory hitch. I'm looking to travel about 4 hours away to pick up a second KJ and I was wondering if it was possible to do so with a u-haul tow dolly? On the u-haul website I put a KJ for both the vehicle towing and being towed and it said it wasn't recommended Plan B is to borrow my Dad's 5.7L Tundra crewmax. Thanks in advance. |

I'm sure you could do it, but just because you can doesn't mean you should... I'd be worried about a "wag the dog" effect towing that much weight, not to mention strain on the drivetrain. Trailer brakes would help. I'd borrow the old mans truck, but if you decide to try it with the kj, keep it at 55 and double your stopping/following distance. I tow way more than I should with my manual gasser KJ all the time, but I take it easy and drive like a granny... |

Yes, you can. We've pulled an Astro on a tow dolly with Eugene. Stingin, is correct, if a little unclear. The Liberty being towed should have it's transfer case in neutral. It must be the transfer case, NOT the transmission. The transfer case can lube itself while being pulled in neutral, the transmission can not. Make sure you lock the steering column. Your Jeep doing the towing should have overdrive turned off. If you don't know this already, there is a button located on the shifter that turns it off and a light on the dash that indicates that it's off. Tow dollies are a little unstable and at times can wag the dog. I recently towed Grumpy on a dolly using Green from Toledo to Chicago and was comfortable at about 60 mph, unless getting passed by a semi or a series of cars, then things would start swinging back and forth. With everything hooked up, you won't want to back up ever and tight turns can be a pain. I typically triple my expected stopping distance and space needed to enter traffic. |

Appreciate the responses guys! Couldn't get my dad to give up the Tundra so I'm going to rent a pick-up instead, with a u-haul auto transport trailer instead of a tow dolly. |
