Post subject:  Hitch question

I'm looking at getting a class 3 hitch for my Libby.

Th dealer quoted me a price around $500, while u-Haul quoted a price of $230. Has anyone installed a U-Haul hitch, and have any pics.? Would there be any istallation issues seeing as the Libby is a Renegade model, with skid plates?

Thanks

I purchased a hidden hitch from e-trailer.com for 110 plus shipping. The install took all of 30 minutes. It bolts up to the factory holes where the skid plates mount. The frame has nuts pre welded in place. The most difficult part is moving the exaust pipe so you can get one of the bolts in place.

The only issue I had with the install was the the pre-welded nuts were rusted and the mounting bolts were so stiff going in that I twisted one off and broke it. I had to take the jeep into a shop to get the broken bolt removed and the threads cleaned out with a tap, cost me $50. Otherwise a rear hitch is so easy to install that it would be a waste to pay what the shops are quoting you for the job. Do it yourself!

I ordered the Hidden Hitch from Hitchmart.com, was just under $200 for everything. Put the sucker on in the driveway, took a little linger than 30 mintues. Had to remove a tire to get it up there correctly.

I bought a Hidden Hitch from Hitchmart for $125.00 including shipping. Currently the price is $134.00

I don't know what you guys are doing?... I had no issues with bolts or tires on a '02 Limited. Granted, if you don't have the right tools, getting past the exhaust pipe for that last bolt can be a pain but not impossible. Oh yeah, I also installed the Kilby gas tank skid into the same holes too. A floor jack and a extra pair of hands had it done in under 30 minutes.

One thing to note: Don't go and buy the Reese Hitch from Wal-Mart. It's a great hitch at a great price but it doens't fit on with the gas tank skids.

I got the hidden hitch, front and rear, from AllJ. They usually have a great price. Installation was pretty simple. 30 minutes.

Is the dealership quoting you a price of the hitch installed w/ all the wiring. If that's the case your about right on price wise from the dealer. And if your KJ doesn't have the overhead console it's going to be a little more for the wiring.

I got the U-haul class 3 reciever hitch and installation for about $160 here in Houston. I ordered the wiring harnes from e-trailer.com and wired it myself (plug N play). Overall, it cost me about $200. I have pulled in exces of 3klbs too and it has been great.

I had bought a no drill hitch from a local store, but ordered the wiring harness online from etailer. Can't remember the exact price, something like $35. The most reasonable quote I could get from an auto parts store was $72.

As far as problems with the gas tank skid, I first had to get a bolt in on one side. Then on the other side I had to stick a large screw driver in one of the holes to pry while trying to thred a bold in another hole that always seemed to be a fraction of an inch off the mark. My suggestion is have a buddy help you install. My half hour install job was more like 3 hours.

Does anyone know if someone makes a front hitch for a 2005?
It can't be that different than the other years can it?
Thanks

The dealers price MIGHT include the often neccessary Oil, Tranny and other coolers that the factory "Tow Package" has. Class 3 hitch does you no good if your are towing over 2,500-3000 lbs and your tranny and engine fail. With the factory coolers and classIII hitch set-up on my 07, they say I can pull 5,000 lbs. Thats a hell of a lot of beer!!!!

good luck and be careful.
