| Post subject: | Sludge in oil filer neck.... |
So today I was changing my oil (Mobil 1 full syn) and when I removed the filler tube cap there was a lot of peanut butter looking sludge inside it. It was a cross between peanut butter and lard looking stuff but the consistency was much thinner. Ive been doing my own oil changes on various cars for years and never saw anything like this before. Nothing unusual came out of the pan or the filter when I took drained those. I removed everything I could see from the filler neck and replaced the PCV valve then refilled with fresh oil. The only thing I could think of is that i went about 6K miles on this change with the Mobile 1....but I dont think that seems incredibly excessive, right? Has anyone ever seen anything like this before..... |

It was just a pot of refried beans cooking up in the engine. |

Are you sure you weren't using peanut butter as an oil stop leak???? |

Not so normal I say. I haven't seen it on my engine since switching to Amsoil synthetic. But I did see it when running Mobil 1. |

I would say not normal also. I've never seen it before in any engine with any oil. We'll see what happens I suppose, there is nothing I can do now. |

Do you have a pic of what You found? Has your coolant level gone down any recently? It sounds like you might have an extreme case of it. |

I never seen it when I lived out in New Mexico. Nice and dry. Now out it Ohio where it rains almost every day or has almost 100% humidity, I see it all the time. Same oil, same Jeep. Just one more reason to move back west. |

I've had it myself while runing Mobile 1. I think its just condensate mixed with whatever else floats up in a vapor. I might have to switch to Amsoil ! |

Ive been running Mobile 1 now for 5 or 6 change intervals and have never seen it. The only thing I can think of is because I went 6Kish miles on the same oil. We'll see what happens at the next change in 4K. Ill monitor the filler neck for a little while and snap some pics if I see it again. |

Gee.that's strange. I just went out and looked at mine and it's clean. I'm using dino oil and due for an oil change in 889 miles (3000 mile intervals). I was thinking of changing to synthetic too! Change your brand of synthetic and see what happens. Al |

Yea, nice ad. "Thanks Mobil, your product is probably making peanut butter come out of my engine...." How much you think they'll pay for that?? LOL |

Reviving this tread. What ever came out of this ? I purchased an '03 with 40k miles this summer and did my first oil change yesterday. The oil had 3300 miles and 7 months. I did mostly short trips ~ 5 miles and not often as this is my 'winter' car. I found sludge in the filler neck. Is it coming from the crankcase ventillation valve ? Any way to check elsewhere for sludge ? |

Nothing really. I actually havent seen it after I wiped as much as I could out of there. I think what someone said earlier was right about the condensate collecting and turning to sludge. Ill take a check today and see if its back and let you know. Do you have this problem? josh |

My sister has a load of it on her oil cap. I just had a tiny bit. |
