I was watching the Today Show this morning. It turns out that the Government's plan on gas prices is to force companies to make their cars more gas efficent. Starting 2007, the Jeep Wrangler has to get 28mpg! Now this sounds great and all but.........Jeep's are going to loose towing capacity as well as power. Looks like I will be moving over to desiel from now on. |

That sounds like it came from a forwarded email! Got a source for the 2007 Wrangler needing to get 28mpg? |

I cant find a link to show it but they did a peice on how the law is forcing cars to be more fuel efficent. They stated the Wrangler has to get 28mpg by 2007. |

Oops, I read that too fast and missed where it said "Today Show" (yeah, it's in the first line, I know). How on earth are they going to get a wrangler with 28mpg? My cavalier barely got 28mpg, and it had like 120HP and a 2.3L 4 cyl. |

I thought the laws set minimums for the corporate average and broken down into categories like passenger cars and light trucks. In other words, all of the passenger cars from a manufacturer had to average x, the average of all of the suvs had to be y and they slid up a mile or two per gallon each year. Thats one of the reasons to have hybrid cars, with one car getting outstanding economy, a manufacturer could have a gas guzzler or two and still meet the corporate average. The wrangler probably doesn't have to average 28mpg, but somewhere down the line the jeep corporate average for suvs may have to be 28 mpg. Another reason for jeep to branch out into car-based suvs; they should get better economy and help that corporate average. Do a internet search for CAFE, mpg and a year, it should turn up what the standards are. |

It sounds like the Today Show was trying to spook its viewers. Jeep will probably have to make some changes, but they had to know this was coming, and that's why they've introduced the CRD and the new cute utes to their lineup. They're not going to be able to produce a Wrangler that gets 28 MPG. And, anyway, it's 24 MPG for light trucks (including SUVs), not 28 MPG, and they have until 2011. Quote: Under the CAFE system, automakers now must meet an average of 21.6 mpg for their 2006 model year light trucks. That average will rise to 22.2 mpg for 2007 vehicles.
Under the new rules, the fleetwide average would reach 24 mpg by 2011, when the largest SUVs will be included in the calculation. The program will be phased in through 2010, with automakers having the option of complying under the old system or using new system. If automakers use the old system, the targets would be 22.5 mpg in 2008, 23.1 mpg in 2009 and 23.5 mpg in 2010. All manufacturers would need to use the new system in 2011. |

Remember that a factory claimed 28mpg is really more like 20 mpg so its not a huuuuuge change |

actually, what is going to happen is this: all suv's including big ol' hummers and excursions will have to have an 11% increase in MPG within the next four years. and by the year 2011 all vehicles must get at least 26MPG( this may be 27 or 28 MPG, i dont recall) hope this helps |

Don't forget where is the fuel energy going towards Right now we use 85% gas / 15% ethanol The future is E85 - something that GM is pushing very hard. Flex Fuel technology is here to stay 15% Gasoline / 85% Ethanol more info at http://www.gm.com/company/onlygm/livegr ... index.html BTW - if you see the part that says "Watch Video" and select VOLUNTEERS video, my company is producing those - by the thousands |

I like the idea of the FlexFuel, but I'm not happy that it will cost approximately the same as gas. Oh & there are not any E85 stations anywhere near me. |

I bet there's a loophole of some sort where *A* wrangler has to get 28MPG, not ALL Wranglers... |

Once again, screwed for oil. |

CAFE standards apply to entire fleets of vehicles, not individual models. That would mean that Daimler-Chrysler's entire line of trucks (SUV's, vans, pickups, crossover vehicles) would have to AVERAGE at least 28mpg, and cars would have to AVERAGE a separate mph. I think I read this morning that the CAFE is only going up to like 24 for trucks, and that will be phased in over the next five years. |

This could be great for the Diesel engine. We may finally see more options for diesel engines. I hope this means that the 4 door wrangler will be available with a diesel. A couple of stories on the new standards. http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/ar ... 00336/1148 http://www.detnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/ar ... 148/AUTO01 |

I also heard on the news where the Wrangler will have to get 28mpg. I also heard that each model has a specific number which is calculated in relation to the wheelbase. I'd place money on the fact that whoever originally made the statement that they were no aware that the Wrangler is being remodeled for '07 and the wheelbase is being lengthened. That will make the target mpg figure lower than 28 (by how much I have no clue, as I have not seen the formulas). |

I'm not going to get a rant about mass media, but guys please don't believe everything you hear on TV. The news has one goal, to get people to panic. Here's the 30 second of reaseach I did: Fuel Econmy Standards I suggest skimming the final rule (PDF), it's 371 pages long, but is very detailed. The government actually states the GM will have a hard time meeting these goals and federal assistance might be required. These are proposed standards, nothing has been approved and no approval date has been set. Basically to sum it up, SUV's which are included in the 'light trucks' category (based on footprint, wheelbase x avg. track width), like our KJ's, will be required by 2011 to get 28.4 mpg.

The March 29th, 2006 stories on ABC and in the Financial Times have things a little different than reported here. 2011 is the date, and SUVs most meet 24 mpg, if my no coffee brain remembers what I saw 5 minutes ago. After all I didn't know this was the day to switch to DST. |
