UOA Comments: Base Number is significantly low. Infrared results indicate lube oxidation. Lubricant and filter change acknowledged.

My Comments: This was a 1 year interval with 6,211 miles on the sample. Even though the oil adequately protected the engine, the lubricant did not hold up as well as I had hoped for. I went ahead and added a new filter and went back with the Amsoil 5w30 ASL oil; however, instead of waiting a full year before my next oil change, I will change the oil at 6 months or at the 3,000 mile interval and resample. At that point in time, I will switch to the Amsoil 10W30 ATM. I'm a little disappointed in the Amsoil ASL 5W30 results for this application.

According to the lab and an independent mechanic who looked at my UOA, they all concluded that my UOA had great numbers for the 3.7L, even much better than what they typically see with other conventional oils. I asked why the TBN was so low for the usage; and they said that hot running engines with small sumps typically experience lower TBN’s even to the point that auto manufactures will generally increase the sump capacity for different applications if they feel that the motor will be worked harder. Even going from a 5 quart to 6 quart in sump size greatly increases the life of the oil.

I’m now seriously thinking about installing a dual remote by-pass system. One advantage of having a dual remote by-pass filter is to increase the oil capacity as well as provide a little extra cooling. Anyway, these are things to think about for those of you who are running longer intervals without taking UOA’s to verify the condition of the oil.

We’ll be taking the KJ on a road trip over the holiday season. The oil sample kit is packed and ready to go. I’ll pull a sample at approximately 3,000 miles. I have the Amsoil SAE 10W-30 ATM on standby. I’ll post the results when they come in.

UOA Comments: Flagged data does not indicate an immediate need for maintenance action. Continue to observe the trend and monitor equipment and fluid conditions. Flagged additive levels are different than what should be present for the lubricant that is
identified for this unit. (This does not imply that the lubricant does not meet proper API, SAE, or ISO classifications.)

My Comments: The UOA was much better this time around with a little over 3,000 miles on the lubricant. I changed over to the Amsoil SAE 10W-30 ATM to see how it holds up at longer intervals.

Forgive my ignorance, but what does UOA stand for?
How and at what cost do you guys have your oil tested?
I switched to Amsoil ASL 5W30 signature series, a few years back thinking it is is a reliable product for 1 year change intervals.

UOA = Used Oil Analysis

I have mine tested through Oil Analyzers. http://www.oaitesting.com/
I don't remember the cost, I usually order 10 pre-paid postage UOA sample kits at a time. They might be around $25 dollars for each kit.

I sample by extracting the oil from the dipstick tube using a pump. The sample bottle threads into the pump to ensure that the sample is not contaminated.

My belief is that the 3.7L runs on the warm side. In my case, this can be contributed to various factors. I’m switching to see if the 10W30 ATM will resist thermal breakdown better than the 5W30 ASL.

Thanks for the reply!
I'm really itching to do this.. Would love to know what's going on inside my engine, although it might not be cost effective..
I also noticed that you have installed under the hood lights.. care to elaborate on that? any photos?

It's very cost effective when you find something wrong. Preventive maintenance is cheap insurance.

That is the factory light on my Jeep Cherokee. :D

factory light? You mean your Cherokee came with one and then you transfered it to your Liberty?

The picture above in a 2000 Jeep Cherokee XJ, not a 2007 Jeep Liberty KJ.

UOA comments: Data indicates no abnormal findings. Resample at normal interval. Lubricant and filter change acknowledged.

My comments: I like the TBN for the Amsoil ATM 10W30. Unless future UOAs change my mind, this will be the lubricant that I will use from here on out. I might sample again at the next annual oil change to monitor the condition of the engine.
